Lampard confident Coventry will learn from opening-day defeat to Arsenal

Frank Lampard believes Coventry City’s defeat to Premier League champions Arsenal will prove a valuable learning opportunity as they adapt to playing at the top level.

Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard scored as the Gunners started their title defence with a routine 3-0 win over Lampard’s newly promoted side on Friday.

Coventry’s only real opportunities were an overhead effort from Loum Tchaouna, which landed on the roof of the net, and a tame Jack Rudoni header that was saved by David Raya late on.

Last season’s Championship title-winners only had one shot on target and put up 0.28 expected goals, compared to Arsenal’s 1.8 xG.

But the nature of Coventry’s defeat did not concern Lampard, who believes playing at the Emirates Stadium on such a big occasion will serve his team well going forward.

“It was clearly a big challenge,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “They’re a fantastic team, it was a good lesson for our boys to see the levels. They played like champions.

“It was a difficult game for us, the experience of it is probably good for us, in terms of the stadium, the atmosphere at the start of the game, and the quality that they have.”

Coventry only had four touches in Arsenal’s penalty area, all of which came in the second half, but Lampard pointed out that most teams will struggle against Mikel Arteta’s men.

“You’ll see more from us than that. Arsenal will beat a lot of teams here,” Lampard said when asked about Coventry’s lack of attacking threat.

“There were some bits I didn’t mind. The lads deserve better than that. Our support was amazing – the fans understand we lost this game and will learn a lesson.

“Every game won’t look like that. This is an Arsenal team buoyed by where they are at.

“Leeds came here [early last season] and lost, and they stayed in the Premier League. I’m not making any early judgements. We will have to acclimatise.”

Coventry’s second game of the Premier League season is against fellow promoted side Hull City on August 29, at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and Lampard knows getting the home fans onside early in the campaign will be crucial.

“A few years ago, this club was in League Two, playing in a different stadium. When we came in, we were 17th in the Championship,” Lampard said.

“The boys have risen; the team have risen and the connection with the fans has been amazing. They have been a huge strength for us. They have to remain that way and the lads have to give everything.”

Lampard has only won one of his last 18 games as a manager in the Premier League (D4 L13), while his teams have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last 17 of those matches.
