Moses Itauma may have a heavyweight unification fight against Daniel Dubois or Fabio Wardley waiting if he captures his first world title later this month.
A win over Filip Hrgovic for the vacant IBF heavyweight title on August 29 at the O2 Arena in London would move the 21-year-old within striking distance of one of British boxing’s biggest domestic fights. Before reaching that stage, he would first need to defend the belt against mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez.
Queensberry promoter Frank Warren believes that sequence would leave the winner of the October rematch between WBO champion Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley as the logical next target. If every piece falls into place, Wembley Stadium is the preferred venue for the unification fight.
“It would be huge, absolutely huge. They’re big punchers. These guys are big, big punchers. They’re exciting. They’re not in boring fights,” Warren told BBC Sport.
The potential matchup carries another complication. Wardley and Itauma are both trained by Ben Davison, leaving the respected coach with a difficult decision if the fight comes together.
“I’ve seen best friends fight each other, but they do it for the money they get, which pays the bills,” Warren said.
First, Itauma must get past the most accomplished opponent of his professional career. Hrgovic has spent years among the heavyweight division’s leading contenders and brings considerably more top-level experience than any boxer Itauma has faced.
Winning the IBF title would leave the British heavyweight within reach of one of the country’s biggest championship fights if the remaining results go his way.
