José Mourinho is back at Real Madrid with a calmer public tone, but the football will still need bite – and William Hill News look at what to expect from The Special One as he returns to the Santiago Bernabeu.

He has already said he wants to help Kylian Mbappé become even better, and he has stressed that he does not want to be more important than his players.

That sounds like a coach trying to build control first and the drama second, which is exactly the kind of reset Real Madrid can use after a demanding campaign.

    • Real Madrid To Win La Liga, Copa Del Rey & UEFA Champions League – 50/1

    Start With Structure

Mourinho has made a point of defending his first Madrid spell, saying the side that scored the most goals in the history of Spanish football was his Real Madrid.

That matters because the old caricature of Mourinho as pure shutdown football never really told the full story. His Madrid sides were built to attack fast, but only after the shape behind the ball was locked in.

Expect Real Madrid to look more organised without the ball, with less freedom for chaos between the lines. Mourinho’s instinct is to build from a compact base, then attack with speed once the ball is won.

That normally means a clearer hierarchy, a tighter distance between midfield and defence, and a stronger emphasis on when to press rather than pressing for the sake of it.

    Pragmatic Shape

A 4-2-3-1 is the most natural Mourinho fit for this squad, because it gives him the protection he likes in central areas while still leaving room for elite forwards to isolate defenders.

It also suits a team that wants to keep Mbappé high, rather than asking him to spend too much time helping in the build-up.

That does not mean Madrid become flat or cautious. It means the team becomes more deliberate and that may enhance their appeal in La Liga odds.

Full-backs would probably choose their moments more carefully, one midfielder would sit deeper to screen transitions, and the attacking midfielders would be asked to connect quickly rather than overplay moves. Mourinho usually wants his side to hurt opponents before they can reset.

    Mbappé The Focal Point

Mourinho’s comments about Mbappé are revealing because they suggest the forward will be the centre of the project, not just the headline name.

A coach like Mourinho does not waste a player with that kind of acceleration and finishing. He tends to build the attacking plan so the star forward gets the ball earlier, in better spaces, and with fewer touches needed to reach goal.

That could mean a more direct route into attack, more vertical passing through midfield, and a stronger focus on quick combinations around Mbappé’s runs.

If Madrid find the right balance, the Frenchman could get more clean chances in transition than he did in a possession-heavy, slower build-up system.

    In/Out Of Possession

The biggest in-possession shift should be tempo. Mourinho has already spoken about being calmer, more analytical, and more honest in his communication.

That fits a team that will probably become less improvisational and more patterned. Madrid should still dominate the ball in plenty of league games, but the purpose of possession will matter more than the volume.

Out of possession, expect a stronger mid-block than a full-throttle high press. Mourinho has always preferred his team to stay compact enough to control central space, then explode forward when the trigger is right.

That approach reduces exposure to counter-attacks, which is a major practical advantage for a squad full of attacking talent.

    What Can Supporters Expect?

The early signs will be about habits, not just results. If Madrid are squeezing the pitch better, winning second balls faster, and protecting transitions more cleanly, Mourinho’s hand will already be visible.

If Mbappé is receiving the ball earlier and running at defenders with support around him, that will be another clear marker.

Mourinho is also beginning this preseason with time on his side. Real Madrid opened preparations for 2026/27 with him leading training at Ciudad Real Madrid, and the first session was described as intense, with work on physical conditioning and ball work.

That extra preparation window matters, because Mourinho teams usually look sharper once the tactical rules are drilled properly.

    Likely Ceiling This Season

The best-case version of this team is obvious enough to excite the Bernabéu crowd. Madrid become harder to play through, more ruthless on the break, and more efficient in big matches. Mourinho has always been at his best when his team can win ugly on a Tuesday and still look terrifying on a Saturday.

The downside is just as clear. If the system becomes too rigid, Madrid could lose some of the fluid attacking freedom that makes their best players so dangerous.

The trick for Mourinho will be keeping the structure without turning the attack into a cage. If he gets that balance right, Real Madrid in 2026/27 could look less flashy in spells but far more ruthless when it counts.
