Big E recently revealed WWE had very different plans for his WWE Championship reign before WrestleMania 38. The former champion said he was originally set to lose the title to Seth Rollins before winning it back at WWE WrestleMania 38.
However, those plans completely changed after several creative changes and other unforeseen events.
Big E reveals WWE’s original WrestleMania 38 championship plan
Speaking with Sam Roberts, Big E said WWE initially planned for him to face Seth Rollins in a singles match at Day 1. He said, “Actually, the plan, what we were moving towards initially, was it was supposed to be me and Seth in a singles match at Day 1. I was going to drop the title anyway. So I was supposed to drop the title to Seth. We’d come back at Mania, we’d do it again, and I’d regain the title.”
He continued, “Well, actually, I think by the time we got to December, it had already started morphing because it was me and Seth was named as the number one contender. I can’t remember exactly when that was, but we had a lot of lead time before Day 1 on January 1. And so, creative, the office, was, ‘Okay, we gotta, we need a filler program.’”
Big E also explained that the plan began changing weeks before Day 1. “So then KO got added. Then it became a three-way thing for a little bit. Then Bobby needed something to do. Vince loves Bobby. So Bobby’s inserted. So it was supposed to be a four-way at Day 1,” he added.
Continuing, he said, “Then Roman’s sick, now Brock’s on. So this match that was supposed to be a singles where I dropped the title at Day 1, I regained it at WrestleMania, it doesn’t even look anything close. And by the time we get to WrestleMania, my neck is broken my career is over.”
He also made it clear he was not sharing the story out of disappointment. Big E added, “So that whole butterfly effect is kind of insane. And I don’t mention any of this because it’s, ‘Woe is me. I should have gotten a WrestleMania spot.’ But it’s so funny how life works.”
