Former WWE Champion Big E has revealed that WWE once viewed him as a potential candidate for a major push alongside Roman Reigns during the early stages of both stars’ main roster careers.

While the company ultimately went in a different direction, Big E admitted he believes WWE made the correct call.

Speaking on Notsam Wrestling, Big E reflected on a conversation he had around 2013. That discussion granted him an interesting glimpse into WWE’s long-term plans. Although nothing was ever guaranteed in the squared circle of creative, the comment stuck with him years later.

Big E recalls being in the conversation with Roman Reigns

According to Big E, one of WWE’s writers told him there was internal discussion about whether he or Roman Reigns would become the company’s next heavily promoted young star.

“At one point the rumor I was getting from one of the writers was — and they definitely made the right decision — but at the time I was told there was kind of a choice… around 2013, it was kind of Roman or me as far as the next young guy they really wanted to push,” the former WWE Champion said.

Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, Big E had no hesitation in acknowledging that WWE’s decision paid off.

“It’s very clear Roman was the right choice,” he added.

Big E’s comments weren’t framed as frustration or regret. Instead, they offered a candid look at how quickly plans can change behind the scenes in professional wrestling. As fans know, creative directions often shift before they ever reach television. This proves that even the strongest rumors can tap out before the opening bell.

Big E also recently discussed how his own WWE Championship reign was originally scheduled to follow a different path. He revealed that the initial plan called for him to lose the title to Seth Rollins at Day 1 before regaining it at WrestleMania 38. However, multiple creative changes — including Roman Reigns’ illness and Brock Lesnar’s addition to the title match — altered those plans completely.

While history took a different route, Big E’s latest comments provide another fascinating look at the many “what ifs” that have shaped WWE over the years.
