Chris Jericho explains why he delivered a short promo in his AEW return.
After nearly a year away from AEW television, Chris Jericho returned to Dynamite with a simply four-word statement for fans: “Winnipeg… AEW…I’m home.” During an interview with Close Up with Renee Paquette, Jericho revealed that his brevity was intentional in order to build further intrigue around his reappearance.
“It was something that I had learned in in WWE where sometimes you don’t have to say a lot. And that’s why my promo was like two words,” Jericho said. “It’s a Pat Patterson thing. Why throw everything out at once? You got the initial pop of being back on the show. Let’s leave it, and then explain more the following week. It was great too because Winnipeg reaction was great, but it got better in Edmonton and got better in Vancouver. It just kept getting better and better and better.
“I think it was a reset and it really kind of threw a proverbial cup of cold water in everybody’s faces where no one really knew what was going on, and then it was done. It’s like ‘Did he just come back? This is crazy.’”
Jericho marked his AEW comeback with that brief message on the April 1 edition of Dynamite, which emanated from his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The following week, the former AEW World Champion expanded upon it, noting that he inked a new multi-year deal with the company. Jericho additionally announced that his return match would pit him against The Demand’s Ricochet at AEW Dynasty.
