    6th tier club Braintree Town hugely benefit from a FIFA payment and a sell-on clause from a player’s transfer.

    Prior to the 2026 World Cup getting underway, Braintree, who were relegated to the National League South, made the headlines, with a huge payment from FIFA helping out a financially troubled side with their player Tommy Smith involved in the tournament.

    Tommy Smith received a call up to New Zealand’s 2026 World Cup squad, a call up is massive for Braintree, with boss Steve Pitt saying to BBC Essex at the time that the club would benefit financially from the defender, as the £175,000 “thank you” payment by FIFA will see them lifted out of a transfer embargo.

    Since that the World Cup has ended, and with the transfer window open, Braintree have received a further boost.

    Pete O’Rourke (@SportsPeteO) wrote on the 27th of July 2026: “The National League are set to lift the transfer embargo Braintree Town have been under since May.

    “The club pocketed £175,000 from FIFA after Tommy Smith made New Zealand’s World Cup squad & will earn £375,000 from Kyrell Lisbie’s move to Millwall due to a 12.5% sell-on clause.”

    After his side’s 4-0 win against a youthful Colchester side, Steve Pitt said when asked about looking ahead to the start of the season: “It’s been a long road. It’s been a difficult path.

    “Obviously we had our problems and they’re well documented last season and unfortunately those problems continued as a legacy from after the end of the season into the summer and what have you.

    “So I think the reality is from the chairman downwards I think anybody would say that we’re in as good a position if not better than anybody would have appreciated and expected from where we left off on Saturday the 25th of April.

    “So now it’s just a question of getting it right. I’ve got to get the I’ve got tweaks that I need to make to the squad. I certainly haven’t decided on the starting 11. There will be more movement between now and the and and and Saturday the 8th.

    “But that’s my responsibility. I know what I’ve got to do in the areas that I want to do some more business in. And from tomorrow onwards, I’ll be working on that.”

    Steve Pitt also tweeted on the departure of Kyrell Lisbie’s transfer to Millwall: “And the journey for Kyrell continues. So proud of the boy & our part @braintreetownfc in his continuing elevation.

    “Non league step 4 to step 1 to L1 to the Championship in 2 years. It just goes to show if you combine ability with that hunger & desire anything is possible ⚽️💙”

The brilliant thing and what they always do is give opportunities and take the risk/reward on lower league players and back themselves to develop and platform them to get ££. Good recruitment isn’t spotting a player, it’s knowing how & where to develop them, how they fit into the clubs identity, and if your clubs identity is on the pitch performance to become a business benefit, Peterborough are one of if not the best in the EFL at it.
