Former Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez believes the club can convince Julian Alvarez to stay for one more year.

Alvarez has already made plenty of headlines this summer regarding his future, with the Argentina international seeking a move away from the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

The 26-year-old is reportedly keen to join Barcelona, while Real Madrid have already seen a €150m bid rejected by Atleti.

Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested in the forward’s services, though Atleti insist they intend to keep Alvarez, who has a €500m release clause.

Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 games for Los Colchoneros, while his 66 direct goal involvements are more than any other player for the club since his arrival.

Suarez, who won LaLiga with Atleti in 2020-21, says he faced a similar situation during his time with Liverpool, when he was convinced to stay on in 2013 before joining Barca a year later.

“The same thing happened to me in Liverpool. I said I wanted to go to Arsenal, then Steven Gerrard came and convinced me I had to stay,” Suarez told El Larguero.

“He told me that if I had a great year, they would help me go to Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich, wherever I wanted. He convinced me.

“I apologised for my comments, I gave my all to Liverpool, and after just three games they already loved me, and it was my best season there.

“They [Atleti] can convince Julian to stay for a year. Maybe Julian will stand firm; it depends on each person.”
