Fans react with Oxford United ‘interested’ in odds-on bookies favourite Aaron Ramsey to replace Matt Bloomfield.

Things moving quick behind the scenes it seems, the 35-year-old ‘impressing the club’s higher-ups in an earlier meeting’, according to Oxford Mail’s Malachi Obrey.

After Bloomfield was sacked, bookies installed Dave Challinor as the favourite, before he dropped down the list and Karl Robinson soon made his way to the top.

Now it’s Aaron Ramsey, priced at 1/2, with the bookies BetVictor currently having him at 4/6, and has already been interviewed. Karl Robinson is at 7/4, Alan Sheehan at 8/1, Craig Short and Andy Woodman at 10/1, Wayne Rooney at 12/1, and trio Dave Challinor, Mat Sadler and Richie Wellens at 16/1.

I have reason to believe there has been movement in regards to a potential move for Ramsey.#oufc

He spent much of his playing career in the Premier League, he started out at Cardiff as a schoolboy into his youth, then the senior before moving to Arsenal in 2008, career came to a halt after breaking his leg in 2010.

Then after loans with Nottingham Forest and Cardiff, got back in the Arsenal team, netted 16 goals in the 2013/14 season, got the winner in the 2014 FA Cup final against Hull, helped the Gunners win in the 2015 FA Cup Final, scored anther FA Cup winner in the 2017 final.

Then he went on to play for the likes of Rangers, Nice, Cardiff and Mexican side Pumas UNAM. He retired in April 2026, and is now looking to properly launch his coaching career.

He was caretaker at Cardiff between the 19th of April and 30th of June in 2025, in charge for three games drawing 2 and losing 1.

Fans react with Oxford United ‘interested’ in odds-on bookies favourite to replace Matt Bloomfield…

@Joe_Citrone: Aaron Ramsey odds-on favourite for the job. He might be amazing, he might be the next best manager in the whole world… But it just seems such an unnecessary gamble given the scale of the job in front of our next head coach. #oufc

@TomMRussell91: I personally think it’s a big risk, bringing in someone who, before now has very limited managerial experience. 3 games as caretaker at Cardiff. Don’t get me wrong, whoever we bring in, I will give my full backing, but just a bit skeptical #oufc

@Palmrick_pfc: Sometimes need the risk and experience ain’t everything Mous working out well for us. Surprised still here tbh

@TomMRussell91: Get what you’re saying, I will back whoever we bring in, if it is him, then I hope he helps ox back to the championship

@Palmrick_pfc: Yeah only thing you can do. Ox always comes up on my TL and always kinda keep an eye on you where we came up together and must admit it did surprise me you sacked Bloomfield now. Feels a bit late

@CYMRU270: Is a massive risk but have to back him. Look what we did under BBM. I know it’s probably Naive of me because he’s a club legend but the 3 games he had with us we seemed to play some good footy

@Callum_OUFC: I’m sorry but you just don’t sack Matt Bloomfield for Aaron Ramsey. He might be a good coach but we’re in such an attractive position to avoid taking these sort of risks

@1893_Charlie: Certainly in the minority here but I wouldn’t hate this. Yes it’s a risk but I’m not so sure there are any “risk free” candidates. Bringing in an experienced assistant manager, would be imperative.

@TomMRussell91: Hope he’s got some decent contacts 😉, in all seriousness I hope he smashes it, if it is him #oufc

@oxfjackm: Weirdly wouldn’t be that against Ramsey #oufc

@Stuartjamess: They would need to back him massively though

@oxfjackm: Think we will back whoever it is. It’s a strange one because it seems a weird decision to sack Bloomfield for him as it’s not an obvious upgrade, but has the potential to be. Usually pretty open minded to managers taking on their first job, so there’s definitely worse out there.

@Stuartjamess: I wonder if they’ve looked at it and want someone who’s a bigger name who can bring more money into the club if that makes any sense.

@Shottonstache: If the #OUFC choice is Aaron Ramsey, it’s a very strange one. Of course, he may turn out to be a top-quality manager, but to destabilise the pre-season (again!) for someone with negligible management experience is nothing other than a total punt. Or maybe he’s the new Chris Turner, and the club are actually about to announce Patrick Kluivert. #OUFC

@danielfreeman83: A few days to mull over this as had a busy weekend. Now has to be the time that we hear from the Chairman, explaining what’s happened here and why. A complete wall of silence since being appointed on May 6th and it’s not good enough. The supporters deserve better #oufc
