Mercado came out aggressively and landed clean combinations from the opening round.
Mercado landed several punches during the opening round and continued to press forward as Burgos attempted to respond. The action remained at close range for much of the round before Mercado ended the fight in the second.
Burgos, a former world title challenger known for his durability and experience, struggled to deal with Mercado’s pace and precision.
The end came in the second round.
Mercado first hurt Burgos with a short right hand and followed it with a left hook that sent the Mexican veteran to the canvas. Although Burgos beat the count, he was visibly shaken and unable to recover fully.
Sensing the finish was near, Mercado immediately pressed forward. He backed Burgos into a neutral corner and landed a crushing straight right hand that dropped him for a second time. Referee Ray Corona quickly waved off the contest as Burgos was unable to continue.
The victory improved Mercado to 19-0 with 18 knockouts and allowed him to retain his WBO International super lightweight title. More significantly, it marked the first stoppage loss of Burgos’ long professional career.
Following the victory, Mercado used his post-fight interview to call out undefeated WBO champion Shakur Stevenson. Ranked among the leading contenders in the division, Mercado made it clear he believes he is ready for a major step up in competition.
Whether that fight materializes remains to be seen, but Mercado’s performance left little doubt that he is one of the division’s most dangerous punchers. The combination of speed, power, and finishing ability he displayed against Burgos turned what was expected to be a solid test into a one-sided showcase.
