Scaloni: Being world champions guarantees us nothing

Lionel Scaloni insisted “being world champions guarantees us nothing” as Argentina prepare to defend their title.

Holders Argentina will attempt to become the third team to win back-to-back World Cups, after Italy (1934-1938) and Brazil (1958-1962).

Only Brazil (five), Germany and Italy (four each) have won the World Cup more often than Argentina (three), however, since Argentina’s first triumph in 1978, no nation has lifted the trophy on as many occasions as La Albiceleste.

Argentina begin their title defence on Tuesday, taking on Algeria at Kansas City Stadium in what will be the first meeting between the two sides at the World Cup.

Their only previous encounter was a June 2007 friendly – Argentina won 4-3 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou; Lionel Messi scored his first international brace in that match.

Scaloni is optimistic about his side’s chances of retaining their title, but believes nothing will be handed to them.

“Being world champions guarantees us nothing,” said Scaloni in his pre-match press conference.

“We have to keep competing the same way and prove again what we’ve achieved. We want to continue competing with the same mentality and keep showing up when it matters.

“We’re doing well and staying calm. We’re confident and know we’ve arrived in very good form. We already have the experience from 2022, and we know the first match is important, but it’s not decisive.

Messi has played 26 matches at the World Cup, more than any other player (13 goals, 8 assists).

If he features against Algeria, he would also become the first player in history to participate in six World Cup editions (Cristiano Ronaldo could later achieve this).

“Leo Messi has always been there for us and has always been fundamental,” added Scaloni.

“Now he will be even more important, and he looks in great shape.”
