Fans react as South Shields confirm Mike Williamson as their new head coach, coming in as Ian Watson’s replacement.
Last week, Geoff Thompson confirmed South Shields, who lost in the National League North playoff final to Kidderminster, had received an approach from an EFL club for manager Ian Watson and Magnay, with there plenty of interest from clubs in the duo.
The appointment was soon confirmed by League Two new boys Rochdale, coming in a replacement for Jimmy McNulty who left for League One side Stockport, who parted company with Dave Challinor following a playoff final defeat.
Mark Carruthers reported that Mike Williamson, who was a Director of Performance and Culture at the club, ‘could be in line for a return to management’.
He has since got the job, fans giving a mixed reaction to this one…

A club statement issued on Sunday evening read: “South Shields Football Club can confirm that Mike Williamson will step into the role of Head Coach with immediate effect.
“Mike brings significant experience, leadership, and a strong understanding of the game, and we are delighted to appoint him to the position.
“Williamson has been part of the Mariners’ backroom staff since January 2026, initially joining voluntarily to assist Ian Watson and Carl Magnay. Since then, he has joined the Club on a full-time basis as Director of Performance and Culture, making a significant impact both on and off the pitch.
“The Club believes this appointment represents the best course of action moving forward. Mike has already established himself within the first-team environment, and his previous experience and success at this level align closely with the Club’s ambitions for the future.
“South Shields FC is excited to begin this new chapter under Mike’s leadership. We are confident that his vision, professionalism, and ambition will help drive the Club forward as we continue to pursue our objectives.
“Further updates regarding the coaching staff and preparations for the upcoming season will be communicated in due course.”
Chairman Geoff Thompson said, “Mike has quickly become a valued and influential figure within the football club.
“His leadership qualities, knowledge of the game, and understanding of what we are trying to achieve made him the outstanding candidate for the role.
We are excited to see him lead the team into this next chapter and wish him every success.”
Fans react as South Shields confirm Mike Williamson as their new head coach…
@JoeShieldsMag1: I know a few people won’t be too happy but I think this will work. He struggled at EFL level but he done a superb job at non league level with Gateshead. Excited to see who he can bring in to strengthen the team.
@phil_thornton: Glad it’s sorted and we can get preparations underway for next season. Let’s get behind Mike and his new coaching team and hoping he can have a similar impact here as he did during his time at Gateshead.
@Dr_Iron_Hammer7: Ha ha ha ha ha. From a Carlisle fan, all I can say is good luck. Too many shortcomings to mention, but here’s a few. Terrible communicator, stubborn, tactically inept, single handedly ruined our club, personality of a damp rag. Like I say, good luck. Specialist in failure.
@tomhwilliams23: I know Carlisle fans don’t like him (and completely get why). But he did a brilliant job at Gateshead at this level. South Shields a full time side in a part time league. Should suit implementing his style. Do feel this may be a last chance if this goes wrong however
@scotti1973: Reading all the messages, it doesn’t look like everyone is happy with this news. It’s the player’s we need in to strengthen the side. Will wait and see what come along 🤔 Ha’way the Mariners 💜💙👆
@jgrimmer53: I’m pretty disappointed and underwhelmed by this however got no intention of completely writing him off. Let’s see, UTM 🤎🩵
@James_D89: Mike Williamson is a great appointment. He did well with Gateshead and MK Dons, and Carlisle was simply the wrong club at the wrong time. On paper, with his managerial experience and track record, this is a big appointment for us. #SSFC #AlwaysReady
@ReeceLSport: Whilst he absolutely warrants being this low down he must look back 2 or 3 years and go what am I doing here
@RobSanderson19: He wouldn’t be my choice but good luck to him
@AlwaysReadySSFC: Well there it is as expected, I really hope this works as I’m not convinced!
@NathanSSFCcat2: Why do so many people think its a terrible appointment. Im i only one that thinks its good ?
@JoeShieldsMag1: I’m on the same opinion as you Nathan. Lot of Carlisle fans who don’t rate him after the poor job he done there when Carlisle where in league two. Williamson has a strong record at this level and I think he will do a lot better back in non league.
@NathanSSFCcat2: He has already wont this league once with gateshead . If shields get some quality signings in and proper fullbacks we should be up there
@JoeShieldsMag1: Absolutely mate, Hope to hear about some signings in the next few weeks.
@NathanSSFCcat2: I hope we get Bainbridge back but i think he could be going to rochdale with ian . Need big strong centre back
@JoeShieldsMag1: We need a few big and strong players in the side. I think Williamson will have the players he wants set out already but we definitely need more strength in the side.
@NathanSSFCcat2: 100%. Dont need any forwards, 1 CB, 2 fullbacks, new goalkeeper thats tall. We need strong and tall players, maybe a signing for midfield too. Id be happy with. Wouldnt mind ex gateshead players
Craig Stewart: Imagine fans being negative might want to have a look at his Gateshead record.. won the national league north , took gateshead to the fa trophy final and left them in a playoff position before leaving the club
Johnny Brown: He had us at gateshead playing the best football I’ve ever seen gateshead play on a shie string budget .. give the lad a chance.. I would take him back in a heartbeat
Chris Barron: Lets be honest, most of the managers we have had hardly get you excited at first. Needs to hit ground running though as he knows the squad already.
Christopher Garvey: In all my years of watching football – we as fans have to trust the judgement of the chairman and board with these things . I hope Mike and his team can get us promoted this season . He will have good contacts in the game to get us a bit more experience in side
Alan Richardson: Lots of mixed opinions on here about this. I thought it would happen towards the end of last season but we will know what lies in store by the quality of the players that we sign in the summer. This will also show whether the new consortium has the financial clout to add good experienced players. Who Knows
