Fury attended UFC Freedom 250 festivities in Washington, D.C., where he hinted that UFC president Dana White would soon reveal details surrounding a major development.
“I think I’m going to let Dana do the speaking. I let him do his announcement,” Fury said. “So, let’s hope forward. It’s a massive, massive, massive announcement.”
When asked specifically about Joshua, Fury made it clear that the fight remains firmly on his mind.
“Very, very, very excited for this fight,” Fury said. “It’s been over a decade in the making. For whatever reason, it hasn’t happened before. Let’s hope it happens right now.”
Fury then outlined the timeline that could bring the heavyweight showdown to life.
“Potential fight in August and maybe at the end of the year it happens.”
The former heavyweight champion was also asked whether Dana White could have promotional involvement in a future clash with Joshua.
“For sure. Yes.”
Any lingering doubt about what Fury was referring to disappeared when Turki Alalshikh posted a message directed at the British heavyweight shortly afterward.
“You are welcome my brother @tysonfury welcome back to America. Big announcement coming by us about your fight against @anthonyjoshua @ringmagazine @netflix.”
Turki’s post appears to confirm that an official announcement involving Fury and Joshua is on the horizon, with Dana White expected to have a role in the promotion.
Fury declined to identify his expected August opponent, although his comments suggest he intends to return to the ring before facing Joshua later this year.
“I’ve got no details on the fight, but looking forward to fighting whoever they put in front of me and getting back to do what I do best, winning.”
The possibility of Fury and Joshua finally sharing the ring has hovered over boxing for more than a decade. Both men have held world titles, headlined major stadium events, and become two of Britain’s biggest sporting attractions without ever meeting one another.
Now, following Fury’s White House appearance and Turki’s public statement, fans may finally have reason to believe that boxing’s biggest all-British heavyweight fight is closer than ever.
