Jai Opetaia maintains ‘undisputed is what I want’

Australian cruiserweight Jai Opetaia has outlined that his boxing mission remains to be the undisputed champion at 200lbs.

Opetaia, the Zuffa cruiserweight champion, is 30-0 (23 KOs), is regarded as the best fighter in the world at the weight, although David Benavidez, should he stay at 200lbs after dismantling Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, could argue the case.

Opetaia has boxed just once this year, outscoring Brandon Glanton in March, and he’s calling for the biggest fights at his weight and he wants the champions.

Bournemouth’s Chris Billam-Smith – another Zuffa signing – is in hot pursuit of the Australian southpaw following his stoppage of Ryan Rozicki last week, but Opetaia is looking for belts and Billam-Smith previously lost his WBO title to Ramirez.

“I actually had a good sitdown with the team today and we’re hoping to make that dream possible by the end of the year,” Opetaia said, talking about his next steps at a TKO event in Washington DC. “That’s a perfect plan. Early next year would be good but undisputed is what I want. Any of these other beltholders want it, I’m telling you, it’s an easy fight to make. All they’ve got to do it reach out.”
