Chris Eubank Jnr moving to Matchroom not imminent due to ‘the past’

It is no secret that Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing have approached Chris Eubank Jnr over a potential promotional deal.

Hearn and Eubank Jnr previously worked together between 2015 and 2016, with that relationship coming to an end following Hearn’s frustration with Team Eubank’s failure to agree terms for a showdown with then-middleweight king, Gennadiy Golovkin.

The pair would then work together again in 2022 when Eubank Jnr first signed to face Conor Benn only for the bout to be axed during fight week due to Benn testing positive for the banned substance clomiphene.

Eubank Jnr had agreed to come down to 157lbs for the fight and starved himself to make it before Benn’s failed tests were made public. Eubank Jnr continues to blame Hearn for that catchweight.

The fight would eventually happen in April 2025 with Eubank Jnr winning a decision. He would need hospital treatment and, before their rematch seven months later, accused Hearn’s Matchroom of blocking the ambulance. The allegations were unfounded. Benn would win the one-sided sequel in which Eubank Jnr looked a mere shadow of his old self. For both fights, Eubank could only weigh 10 pounds more than the middleweight limit on the day. This, too, he blamed on the promoter.

Since then, Benn has left Hearn and Matchroom to link up with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing. The move was seen as a betrayal to Hearn who had long defended Benn. That sparked interest in a move for Eubank Jnr, but, as Hearn admitted, there is still much to overcome.

“Nothing major really, I mean there’s all kinds of sorts of speculation,” said Hearn of the talks. “There’s nothing imminent, there’s no deep conversations. A couple of little chats between members of the team and stuff like that. I think everybody appreciates how big it would be, but there’s a lot of hurdles to overcome in terms of the past.”
