The Rock and Triple H were two of WWE’s biggest rising stars during the Attitude Era, and fans have spent years talking about whether there was real heat between them behind the scenes.

While speaking to Inside The Ropes, D’Lo Brown was asked about the long-running rumors involving The Rock and Triple H. Brown was right there during the Nation of Domination and DX feud, so he had a close view of what was going on as both men were trying to climb the WWE ladder. Brown said the situation was not as simple as personal hatred. From his perspective, it was competitive heat between two young wrestlers chasing the same top spot.

    “Realistically, it was competitive heat.”

Brown explained that both men wanted to become the top guy in WWE, and that naturally created tension as the space at the top of the card got tighter.

“It’s two young guys who are trying to compete for the same spot and there are tons of spots at the bottom of the card. The further you get up the pyramid to the top of the card, the air gets real thin and only a few guys can be there at a time.”

Brown said The Rock and Triple H were both alpha personalities trying to take up the same space in WWE.

“When you’ve got two guys who are around the same age trying to climb the same ladder, trying to get to the same spot to be the top guy, it gets competitive.”

He made it clear that things were heated, but still handled professionally. Brown said the issue was not about personal hatred as much as both men believing they were better and wanting to prove it.

“It wasn’t personal. It was, ‘I’m better than him and I want to be better than him,’ is what I saw from my perspective and I was on the ground floor watching everything.”

“Yes, it was competitive. Yes, it was heated. But it was all in a realm of professionalism.”

Brown also said fans may have taken that competitive energy and turned it into something bigger over time. He closed out the thought by saying that even if there was dislike between them, it stayed in the professional lane.

“I think people have misconstrued over time that they hated each other on a personal level. They may have hated each other, but it was professional.”

The Rock and Triple H went on to become two of WWE’s most important stars, and their rivalry helped shape a huge part of the Attitude Era. D’Lo Brown’s comments make it sound like the tension was real, but it was also the kind of pressure that comes when two future legends are fighting for the same spot.
