Cody Rhodes is making it clear that Triple H’s WWE creative process works for him, even if many people don’t think his booking style is good at all.
While speaking on his What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Rhodes defended Triple H’s booking approach and explained why he enjoys working under his creative system. Cody said Triple H operates differently from Vince McMahon and other bookers because he gives talent room to bring ideas forward and collaborate. Rhodes explained that, as a performer, he wants ownership over his story and character while still trusting WWE’s system to polish and produce it.
“Most of the time this is my story. It’s my character. I want to get it as good as I can and then you guys fix it up, filter it, produce it for me. One of the things I love about WWE is taking talented people, but then producing them. You’re producing them and funneling and right now Hunter has a different style funnel — Triple H that being — than Vince had, than any other booker’s.”
Rhodes said Triple H’s style is especially fun for talent because it allows performers to try ideas inside the structure WWE provides. He added that the process becomes collaborative, with talent bringing ideas and Triple H helping shape them inside his creative “sandbox.”
“He has a different style that’s really fun if you’re a player for him to go, ‘Hey, I want to be your main guy. I want to be — but this is my — what about this? Try it.’ And to try his sandbox, to try and collab and match that idea.”
Cody’s comments come after Vince Russo ripped Triple H’s comments about WWE creative and accused him of being unfit for his role. Russo claimed Triple H’s “ebb and flow” explanation sounded like an excuse and blamed him for why he no longer watches WWE.
“Bro, he—he did this. This guy doesn’t know what he’s doing. He does not belong in that spot. You never have the mindset, ‘Oh, this could be an okay show. This is going to be mediocre—it’s not going to be a great show.’ Bro, this guy should not be in that spot. The only—guys, let’s stop. Let’s stop. The guy’s in this spot because he married Stephanie. Period, end of story, bro. He’s got no business in this spot. He hasn’t been successful in this spot. He’s been a failure in this spot. The product sucks because he’s in this spot, and that’s the only reason he’s in this spot.”
Rhodes clearly sees things differently. While critics like Russo argue that Triple H’s creative vision is hurting WWE, Cody described it as a system that gives top performers room to contribute while still being produced for a larger audience.
Cody’s defense is obviously important because he is one of the company’s top stars and has worked under both WWE’s current creative setup and other wrestling systems. For him, Triple H’s “sandbox” gives talent room to play while still keeping the product produced and polished.
