Steven Borden isn’t ruling out paying tribute to his father, Sting, through his AEW presentation, but he has no immediate plans to recreate the wrestling legend’s iconic look.
During a recent interview with Trent Osborne of 1010XL, Borden explained why establishing his own identity matters more than borrowing from his father’s greatest moments.
Borden has been teaming with Darby Allin, who previously shared a successful partnership with Sting.
Naturally, questions have followed about whether the younger Borden will eventually wear the face paint, carry a baseball bat, or adopt other familiar elements of his father’s character.

Allin believes any tribute must come from Borden himself rather than being treated as part of a ready-made presentation. He also joked that his tag team partner didn’t need face paint.
“Look how sexy he is. He doesn’t need it,” Allin said before explaining that Borden should only embrace those elements when they feel genuine.
“He’s gotta feel it. Otherwise it’s just like playing his dad’s greatest hits. Everybody will see right through that,” Allin added. He stressed that Borden shouldn’t simply be told to use the bat, wear the paint, or recreate Sting’s famous entrance. Instead, he wants him to write his own chapter in wrestling.
Borden shared that view, making it clear that copying Sting from the outset wasn’t his intention.
“The last thing I want to do is be playing the greatest hits,” he said. However, he left the door open to future callbacks when the timing feels right.
Borden also admitted that immediately appearing in face paint, a trench coat, and carrying a bat could have brought an unwelcome reaction from fans. Since he’s still early in his AEW journey, he’s choosing to take things “week by week.”
For now, Borden is focused on making his own mark rather than stepping straight into Sting’s shadow. The face paint may remain an option, but the next chapter of the Borden wrestling story will be written on his own terms.
