Jon Moxley is struggling to control his emotions after a difficult run in AEW. The former world champion admitted that he was in “a great deal of pain” during a deeply personal backstage segment on the October 14 episode of AEW Dynamite.
The Death Riders leader suffered another loss earlier in the show before breaking down backstage. He showed a side of himself that fans rarely see. With his AEW Continental Championship defense against Mark Davis at WrestleDream coming up, Moxley appears to be dealing with growing pressure both inside and outside the ring.
Jon Moxley reflects on the back-to-back losses in AEW
This week’s Dynamite opened with a trios match between the Death Riders and the Don Callis Family. Moxley teamed up with Daniel Garcia and Gabe Kidd, but they suffered a surprising loss when Mark Davis pinned Moxley.
The defeat seemed to be too much for Moxley. During a backstage interview with his wife Renee Paquette at the end of Dynamite, he started throwing objects and smashing wooden pallets to let out his frustration. He eventually dropped to one knee.
Paquette rushed over to check on her husband after seeing his emotional outburst.
“I’m in great deal of pain,” Moxley said.
When Paquette asked what kind of pain he was feeling, the AEW Continental Champion struggled to explain.
“I can’t tell the difference anymore,” Moxley confessed, suggesting that he could no longer tell the difference between physical and emotional pain.
As Paquette tried to understand what was wrong, Marina Shafir stepped in to help her stablemate. She got down beside Moxley, lifted his face, and said, “Eyes up. Lock in. The only way out is through. You understand me?”
Moxley took her words to heart and repeated the word “through” before telling his stablemates to move on. He eventually regained enough composure to leave with the group, but the segment left fans wondering how he was really feeling.
The emotional moment also comes after a tough run for Moxley in the ring. He previously lost to Will Ospreay at All Out and has now suffered another major defeat ahead of WrestleDream.
Outside the storyline, Moxley has also been mourning the sudden death of his Death Rider stablemate, PAC, making the whole situation another difficult development for the faction during an already challenging period.
