Shakur Stevenson says a fight announcement is coming. Nearly eight months after he beat Teofimo Lopez, the opponent matters more than the tease.

The Lopez win gave Shakur the strongest moment of his career. He controlled a major fight at Madison Square Garden and had the crowd’s attention afterward, when he brought Conor Benn into the ring and called him “food.” That confrontation made a Benn fight look like an immediate possibility. It went nowhere.
Shakur then spent months discussing a fight with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney at 144 pounds. Haney’s side said it accepted the proposed weight, but no fight followed. Shakur holds a WBO title at 140, yet he sought a welterweight champion three pounds below that division’s limit while his own challengers waited. Fans are entitled to ask which division he actually intends to fight in.
Zuffa Boxing signed Shakur during the layoff. Dana White paid for a fighter whose win over Teofimo had made him more valuable, but Zuffa has yet to put him in one of its rings. Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela, another Zuffa fighter, called for the fight. Shakur rejected it.
The WBO has already indicated that a mandatory defense is due. It should follow through with a formal order and a clear timetable if Shakur’s next fight does not satisfy that obligation. A champion’s search for a bigger payday cannot leave the rest of the 140-pound division waiting indefinitely.

White and the executive room would be entirely justified in pulling the plug, swallowing their pride, and sending Shakur right back out to free agency to waste somebody else’s time and money.
Handing Shakur an ultimatum list is the exact kind of hardball Dana White needs to play. If Zuffa lets him dictate terms, negotiate catchweights, and cherry pick soft touches after an eight-month vacation, they surrender control of their own promotional venture. Giving him three names with a take-one-or-walk clause would instantly test his nerve.

Shakur wants no part of a heavy-handed pressure fighter who will force him to run for his life. Dragging elite sharks up from 135 would apply maximum heat. Andy Cruz is pure agony for Shakur. Cruz boasts Olympic gold credentials, textbook Cuban ring craft, and the punch placement to neutralize Shakur’s potshotting style. Cruz represents the one fighter who can beat Shakur at his own game, outboxing him from the outside while forcing the pace.
Floyd Schofield brings the explosive athletic threat Shakur previously avoided when their scheduled Riyadh bout dissolved. Schofield possesses blazing hand speed, sharp combinations, and the hunger of a young lion with nothing to lose.
Forcing Shakur to sign against Mercado, Cruz, or Schofield would strip away the diva behavior in seconds. If he refuses all three, White can rip up the contract, write off the sunk cost, and show the boxing world that Zuffa refuses to be held hostage by fighters who prefer typing to throwing punches.
