As Teofimo Lopez weighs up his options after being ordered by the WBA to defend his welterweight title against Jack Catterall, the holder of the secondary WBA belt at 147lbs, the Englishman has offered him something else to think about.
Lopez is thought to be in negotiations with WBC boss, Ryan Garcia, regarding a unification showdown next year. Both February and May have been reported as potential dates.
Catterall, however, has another idea: The Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury undercard in December. The heavyweight showdown has been reported as all but done for December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
“It would make perfect sense to fight on the Fury vs Joshua card,” Catterall, 33-2 (14 KOs), told TalkSport.
“That would be great for me to fight on that bill, but it is if Teo fancies the trip over here.
“It could warrant having its own card in America, but yeah it’d be nice.”
Should Lopez refuse to fight Catterall, and thus lose his title, Catterall would welcome the chance to fight for the vacant title – or make a first defense if the title is awarded to him – on the Joshua-Fury undercard.
“I would be open to doing that as well.”
