Dmitry Bivol Risks Artur Beterbiev Trilogy For WBO Belt

Dmitry Bivol rejected a December trilogy against Artur Beterbiev to satisfy the WBO, choosing a single belt over the definitive rivalry of his era. Protecting one sanctioning body strap introduces reckless hazards that could erase the rubber match entirely.

RCC Boxing chief German Titov says Bivol-Beterbiev III is being targeted for April 2027. The fight would serve as the opening attraction at the new 8,000-seat RMK Arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Staging the bout there serves regional promoters while shrinking what belongs on a major global stage down to a municipal showroom.

The calendar works aggressively against public interest. Beterbiev reached 41 in January and will enter the ring at 42 by that projected date. That timeline forces Beterbiev into more than two full years of inactivity following their February 2025 rematch. Any victory Bivol manages under those circumstances will trigger claims that he simply ran out the clock on an aging destroyer.

Before any trilogy can materialize, Bivol (25-1, 12 KOs) must first get past Callum Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) on December 12 in Yekaterinburg. Treating Smith as a routine obligation overlooks the physical reality of Bivol’s July elbow surgery.

Bivol operates entirely off his lead arm. His stiff jab dictates distance, controls pace, and sets up his piercing combinations. Smith brings a punishing counter left hook that specifically targets sloppy mechanics. If Bivol carries any hesitation in that surgically repaired joint, Smith has the 6-foot-3 frame, reach, and punching power to exploit it.

Bivol is taking these risks for an organization that previously refused to sanction his defense against Michael Eifert on Russian soil. He is jeopardizing his career-defining bout to appease an alphabet body that could still pull its sanctioning status at the eleventh hour.

Vacating the title would have kept the rubber match on schedule for late 2026 without unneeded detours. Bivol chose the complicated route instead. Between physical recovery, administrative obstacles, and a dangerous puncher in Smith, Bivol is putting his defining moment on the line for plastic and leather.
