Tim Bradley still considers Terence Crawford the face of boxing, but Crawford’s social media reach and pay-per-view history make that claim difficult to defend. Ryan Garcia has the larger audience, while Crawford has the greater career.
Bradley bases his argument on major fighters continuing to pursue Crawford despite his retirement.
“I honestly think still today, the face of boxing is Terence Crawford,” Bradley said on his Enter the Storm channel. “This man is retired, and everybody wants a piece of him. Ryan Garcia, he wants him. Boots, he wants Terence Crawford. Even Canelo wants to fight him. He’s relevant more now than ever. I see Terence at every event. He’s still the face.”
Bradley is overlooking the financial reason fighters keep calling for Crawford. He has fought only twice since the start of 2024, but remains one of Turki Alalshikh’s favored fighters. If Turki finances another Crawford event, the opponent may receive the largest purse of his career.
That makes Crawford an extremely valuable target without making him boxing’s most popular fighter. Ryan, Jaron Ennis and other contenders are not merely chasing Crawford’s legacy. They are chasing the enormous financial package that may accompany him.
Bradley treats those callouts as evidence of Crawford’s public appeal. They may reveal something much simpler: fighters know where the money is. Turki’s financing can create a superfight purse even when Crawford’s personal audience has not produced comparable numbers on its own.
The social media comparison heavily favors Ryan. He has approximately 13 million followers on Instagram, nearly five times Crawford’s 2.8 million. Crawford leads on X with roughly 521,000 followers compared to Ryan’s 221,000, but Instagram is easily the larger platform for both fighters.
The commercial history also weakens Bradley’s argument. His long-awaited fight with Errol Spence Jr. generated an estimated 650,000 to 700,000 pay-per-view purchases. Those were strong numbers, but Spence brought his own established audience to a fight that fans had demanded for years.
Netflix later delivered more than 41 million global viewers for Crawford’s victory over Canelo Alvarez. That enormous total came with boxing’s established commercial king on a streaming service that required no additional purchase.
The Israil Madrimov fight offers a cleaner measurement of Crawford’s individual drawing strength. Industry estimates placed that event between 75,000 and 100,000 pay-per-view purchases despite a deep undercard featuring Isaac Cruz, Andy Ruiz Jr., Jared Anderson and David Morrell.
Across all three events, Crawford supplied the elite boxing. He was not always the attraction responsible for bringing the largest share of the audience. Ryan operates differently. His fights with Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney became cultural events without needing an undisputed championship attached. Casual viewers bought into the personalities, hostility, and spectacle without studying sanctioning body rankings.
Past faces of boxing such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. combined elite ability with enormous commercial leverage. Crawford represents the purist standard. Ryan represents the entertainment standard. Neither completely satisfies that older definition.
Ryan still must defeat an elite welterweight under normal physical conditions after knocking out a badly depleted Conor Benn. His popularity is greater than his accomplishments.
Crawford owns the respect. Ryan owns the wider audience. Bradley is awarding a commercial title based on boxing excellence, but those are two different contests.
