Nestor Bravo is talking about an all-out battle with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz on Saturday night, which sounds brave but tactically suicidal. Cruz enters as a heavy favorite, and Bravo risks worsening the mismatch by choosing the single approach that gives him virtually no shot.
“I’m prepared for everything that Pitbull brings,” Bravo said through a TGB Promotions press release. “He likes to fight, just like I do. If he does something different, then it’s my job to take advantage. We’re both going to try to push each other to another level. I’m a real 140-pounder that he’s going up against.”
Nestor’s physical stature represents one of the few advantages he brings into the ring. He stands considerably taller, having spent his entire run at 140 pounds, while the 5’4″ Cruz originally climbed up from lightweight. None of that matters if Bravo plants his boots to trade tight hooks with a natural wrecking ball.
Bravo should borrow heavily from Lamont Roach rather than trying to prove he is the bigger puncher. Roach troubled Cruz by pivoting away from the initial charges, slipping wide artillery, then scoring cleanly while Cruz reset his feet. Pulling that off demands relentless concentration along with the iron discipline to avoid exchanging when clipped.
Nothing in Bravo’s talk points toward that game plan. If he parks in the pocket, his elongated midsection sits directly at Cruz’s eye level. Cruz will rip to the ribs, force Bravo’s elbows downward, then whip the left hook across the jaw. That height gap simply hands Cruz a wider target.
The hostile San Diego crowd presents another pitfall. Bravo might feel compelled to win over the fans by standing tall during the opening frames. Making that emotional choice will trigger a rapid exit. His only sensible route is frustrating Cruz, dragging him past round four, forcing the shorter fighter to trudge across empty real estate.
Cruz recently brought Eddy Reynoso into his corner, declaring the shift the start of a “new era.” A total transformation will not be required here. If Bravo delivers the brawl he has promised, Cruz simply needs measured approaches, early body damage, plus the patience to let the challenger throw away his own edge.
