“Well, what do we have here? Just my opinion, but no way does Bud stay retired. He still has the competitive drive, he’s not a shot fighter, and he can still make tons of money,” Rafael posted on X. “I remember after Bernard Hopkins first retired. Called him to check in maybe 3 months later, thinking maybe I’d get a good column. He was bored to death. Had been mowing his lawn, going through scrapbooks his wife kept about his career, cleaning his garage. I knew after that call there was no chance he’d resist a comeback. He was back soon after. Crawford reminds me of that. Restless. And has logical opponents at 154 or could go for titles at 160 and be a rare six-division champion.”

The Hopkins comparison works because boxing retirement is often less about physical decline than the sudden absence of competition, attention, and routine. Crawford spent decades organizing his life around beating the next opponent. Walking away does not instantly replace that purpose.

His social media behavior is telling. A fighter committed to retirement does not need to ask fans if they want him back, challenge Boots to accept a theoretical fight, and then accuse him of ducking. That sounds more like Crawford testing demand without committing himself.

The six division title chase offers a cleaner story than returning to 154 pounds. Crawford has already collected championships from lightweight through super middleweight. Winning at 160 would provide a historic target rather than another defense of accomplishments he has already secured.

Money remains the catch. Crawford became accustomed to giant purses for fights with Israil Madrimov and Canelo Alvarez. Restlessness alone will not bring him back for ordinary middleweight money, and a championship belt does not guarantee the payday he would expect.

Boots, Ryan Garcia, and others can keep calling his name. The comeback becomes real only when someone attaches a massive check to it. Until then, Crawford gets to enjoy the attention while remaining safely retired.
