Nick Khan isn’t leaving much room for debate when it comes to where he thinks Triple H stands in the wrestling business. The WWE President believes Paul Levesque is the “best creative” in all of professional wrestling, and that trust is one reason WWE isn’t going to let every complaint on social media dictate what happens on television.
While speaking to The Varsity, Khan was discussing WWE’s ESPN Unlimited distribution and the criticism that sometimes comes from fans. After John Ourand noted that WWE fans “love to complain,” Khan acknowledged that the company does pay attention when people aren’t happy.
Sometimes, those complaints even have a point. WWE will listen and make adjustments when it believes something genuinely needs to change, but Khan doesn’t think chasing every online reaction is a particularly good way to run the company.
“Those complaints, some of them we look at and we say, ‘Hey, there’s some truth to this. Let’s make a little adjustment here, this or that.’ But you cannot cater.”
Khan pointed to politics as an example of how misleading social media can be when it’s treated as a perfect representation of what everybody thinks. In his view, companies can make the same mistake when they assume the loudest reaction online represents their entire audience.
“You’ve seen this in politics. If you believe what social media says, you will incorrectly predict so many outcomes.”
That’s why Khan doesn’t believe WWE should be changing direction every time something gets hammered online. He’s seen what happens when companies start believing everything they read and immediately react to it.
“So for companies that read it and believe it and react to it, it never ever works.”
Instead, Khan believes WWE has to trust the people it hired to make those decisions. When it comes to what actually appears on television, he doesn’t think the company could have anyone better than Triple H.
“You have to rely on your team to know. We have the best creative in terms of all of wrestling in Triple H, real name Paul Levesque. We have the best live events team, in my opinion. We have the best merchandise consumer products team. They’re able to monetize it.”
That’s a pretty strong endorsement considering Khan didn’t limit the comparison to WWE. He specifically called Triple H the best creative in all of wrestling, putting Levesque above anyone else currently responsible for shaping a wrestling product.
Khan sees that same confidence extending across the rest of TKO. WWE, UFC, On Location, IMG and PBR have continued growing, but he knows simply having the right people today doesn’t mean the company gets to stop evolving tomorrow.
“And if you’ve seen the growth at TKO, that’s, you know, UFC, WWE, On Location, IMG, PBR, each of these continue to grow every year. It’s not easy, but it’s not supposed to be easy. So you gotta continue to develop and redevelop what you do, and you gotta make sure that you have the right team in place that can help you make the right decisions.”
Triple H’s creative decisions are always going to give wrestling fans something to argue about, and Khan clearly knows that. He’s willing to listen when those fans have a point, but when it comes to deciding who should actually steer WWE creatively, he already believes the company has the best person in the business doing it.
Do you agree with Nick Khan that Triple H is the best creative mind in all of wrestling right now, or is there someone else you would put ahead of him? Let us know in the comments.
