Skipping the event fits Ryan’s refusal to follow the standard promotional script. Still, disappearing this late raises unnecessary concerns about his preparation. Everyone else is left to fill the empty space.
His unpredictability may irritate Benn more than another exchange of insults. Benn fights with emotion and clearly wanted the confrontation. Ryan denied him that opportunity while forcing the challenger to handle the promotional work alone.
The greater concern was Benn’s appearance. He looked painfully thin while standing on a balcony overlooking the Las Vegas Strip, with dark circles underneath both eyes. That does not prove he is struggling with the 147-pound limit, but his drawn face will receive plenty of attention when he steps on the scale Friday.
The champion’s history adds interest to that moment. He came in 3.2 pounds above the contracted limit for his 2024 fight with Devin Haney, paid a financial penalty and fought anyway. There is no indication that he will repeat that against Benn, but his previous disregard for the limit gives the challenger another reason to study the numbers closely.
Much of Benn’s recent career has been spent above welterweight. Returning to 147 demands a stricter cut, and the real concern is how effectively he rehydrates afterward. He depends on explosive hooks, constant pressure, and enough stamina to chase opponents for twelve rounds.
Kell Brook offers a cautionary comparison. Brook jumped from welterweight to middleweight for Gennadiy Golovkin, then returned to 147 to defend his title against Errol Spence Jr. He struggled late and was stopped in the eleventh round, although another orbital injury also contributed to the ending.
After two physical middleweight fights with Chris Eubank Jr., Benn is cutting back to welterweight. His recovery following Friday’s official weight check matters more than the number itself.
He cannot afford to drain himself while Ryan arrives comfortably at the limit. Benn’s tactical case depends on closing distance and forcing exchanges. If he lacks the strength or energy to pressure Ryan, he is unlikely to win a controlled fight behind the jab.
The weight issue connects directly to Ryan’s counter left hook. Benn often leaps inside with hooks and overhand rights, leaving openings as he attacks. Once Ryan begins timing those forward bursts, Benn will need something beyond aggression.
A high output is not required to punish those mistakes. One clean counter left hook may be enough to alter the fight, especially if returning to welterweight has reduced Benn’s punch resistance.
Saturday will also be Ryan’s first defense of the WBC title he won from Mario Barrios. He is no longer the unpredictable challenger with nothing to protect. Missing a scheduled faceoff during the week of that defense renews familiar doubts about his discipline, even if it reveals little about his physical preparation.
Benn won Wednesday’s argument without throwing a punch. The real evidence comes Friday, when his condition afterward provides the first clue about what returning to 147 has cost him.
