WBO regulations give the championship committee authority to extend the deadline for a mandatory defense so its champion can participate in a unification. This provision leaves Bentley’s team with reason to believe McKenna will receive priority. The organization can approve the fight on the condition that Hernandez challenges the winner next.
Bentley’s preference is easy to understand. McKenna brings the IBF belt, substantial Irish support, and a style that should produce sustained exchanges. Hernandez offers two amateur world championships, difficult timing, and almost no ticket-selling power in Britain or Ireland.
A London or Dublin venue would turn the unification into a genuine regional attraction. Bentley has an established following in London, while Irish supporters would travel for McKenna’s opportunity to add a second world title. Their combined support makes the fight more valuable than a mandatory defense against Hernandez.
McKenna’s pressure may also suit Bentley. The IBF champion fights upright, maintains a heavy output, and sometimes squares his feet when exchanging inside. Bentley does his best work when opponents enter his midrange punching zone, where his explosive right hand can find a direct target.
Trouble begins if McKenna drives him backward. Bentley has struggled when pinned near the ropes and forced to absorb combinations. McKenna lacks devastating single-shot power, but he maintains a pace capable of draining an opponent over twelve rounds. Bentley must hurt him early enough to slow that pressure.
The Irishman faces his own defensive test. His straight-line attacks and squared stance leave openings for counters. Walking repeatedly into Bentley’s right hand may turn his greatest strength, relentless volume, into an invitation for the WBO champion’s best punch.
The proposed unification is also a scramble for authority in a division left open by Janibek Alimkhanuly’s departure for super middleweight. McKenna collected the vacant IBF belt by defeating Etinosa Oliha in August. Bentley inherited full WBO recognition after holding the interim title. Neither man defeated the established champion to claim his belt.
Collecting two titles would give the winner a stronger claim as the leading middleweight and considerable leverage for a three-belt fight with WBC champion Carlos Adames. The loser retains name recognition but returns to the crowded contender pool with far less negotiating power.
The WBO can wreck this little unification by ordering Bentley to face Hernandez first. Bentley would then have to decide how badly he wants to remain champion.
Vacating the WBO belt would still leave him free to face McKenna in a British and Irish domestic attraction. It would no longer be a unification, but the rivalry and ticket-selling appeal would remain. McKenna may also welcome the safer payday instead of waiting for Hernandez to take Bentley’s place at the negotiating table.
Defending against Hernandez carries the greatest danger. Bentley has a strong chance of losing his title to the Cuban and watching the McKenna deal disappear with it. The WBO’s ruling may leave him choosing between the belt he owns and the fight he actually wants.
