Chantelle Cameron claims her team are in “very advanced” talks with Claressa Shields following Cameron’s victory over Mikaela Mayer last weekend.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Shields’ next move as negotiations with Lauren Price, currently a welterweight titlist, seemingly pointed towards a showdown.
However, Shields had indicated that it would be Mayer coming next if the Price talks stalled. But, on Saturday, Mayer was beaten over 10 rough-and-ready rounds by Cameron in Birmingham, England atop an MVP show. Cameron now holds three of the four belts at 154lbs.
Cameron, 35 and 23-1 (8 KOs), is the only fighter to defeat Katie Taylor as a professional and again exhibited, in that close victory over Mayer, she’s one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of her era.
“I fancy [fighting] Claressa Shields,” she said. “I think I really do want to dare to be great and Claressa Shields, she’s the GWOAT, she’s number one and that’s going to be a fight that will just be unbelievable.
“The teams are actually in talks for that now so there is actually movement on that fight and for me that makes me giddy because I think that really is me challenging the very, very best and what an opportunity if this fight comes off.
“[The talks] are very advanced; it is moving pretty quick is what my managers told me, and it is a very high possibility the fight will happen.”
Shields, 19-0 (4 KOs), last fought in August when she trounced Kaye Scott to regain the WBC middleweight title. Previously she’d fought up at heavyweight before opting to drop back down to pursue the biggest possible fights.
