Moses Itauma learned the hard way that talent without stamina gets exposed in deep waters. His ninth-round stoppage loss to Filip Hrgovic showed glaring flaws in preparation. The blame rests squarely on trainer Ben Davison. When a fighter gasses out completely after dominating early, the captain of the ship must take the fall.

Itauma walked into the ring looking like a world beater. He dropped Hrgovic early, built a massive lead on the scorecards, and landed explosive combinations at will. But by the seventh round, Moses was running on empty fumes. His arms turned heavy, his feet stopped moving, his defensive reflexes vanished. By round nine, Hrgovic walked him down against the ropes, bludgeoning a helpless fighter until the referee stepped in.

Davison failed his fighter in two critical areas.

First, the physical conditioning was inadequate for a twelve-round championship fight. You cannot put a twenty-one-year-old puncher in against a seasoned heavyweight without building an elite gas tank. Itauma trains inside a comfortable camp, but he clearly lacked the gritty cardiovascular foundation required for a war.

Second, the corner work was nonexistent when the crisis hit. When a young fighter starts burning energy throwing every shot with bad intentions, the coach must pull back the reins. Davison should have instructed Moses to establish the jab, circle the ring, and take full minutes off to recover his breath. Instead, Davison watched his fighter empty his arsenal into Hrgovic’s iron chin. There were no technical adjustments, no tactical wisdom, zero control over the pace.

Promoter Frank Warren knows how to rescue promising careers after devastating defeats. He rebuilt Daniel Dubois; he will do the same here. But the first move must be immediate and decisive.

Moses Itauma needs to cut ties with Ben Davison today. The ideal replacement is Abel Sanchez, the veteran coach who stood across the ring orchestrating Hrgovic’s victory. Sanchez knew Itauma would blow his engine. He told Hrgovic to stay calm, absorb the early barrage, take over the moment the youngster started gasping for air.

Sanchez would take Itauma up to Big Bear, strip away the hype, build an engine capable of throwing punches all night. Moses has unbelievable hand speed, exceptional natural gifts. What he lacks is an old school trainer who demands relentless discipline.

Someone has to take responsibility for the disaster against Hrgovic. Itauma paid the price with his unbeaten record inside the ring. Davison needs to pay the price with his job.
