    Gateshead keeper Pete Jameson speaks of his surprise after scoring from his own box

    Gateshead goalkeeper Pete Jameson speaks of his surprise after scoring from his own box in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Harrogate.

    Pete said to the club’s media: “Yeah, very similar to Friday. We’ve conceded late again. Sucker punch that again because I thought first off it was very tough with the conditions and we’ve defended really well.

    “Second half we’ve had little bit more joy coming out attacking wise. But yeah, the lads defensively did do really well again. They did. We’ve just been sucker-punched.”

    Interviewer: “Yeah, you mentioned that it sounds like a lot more even speaking to the gaffer as well that it’s much more of a positive front on that defensive side like you say, obviously you’ve had the the sort of late corner obviously the first goal stuck a bit of a deflection and whizzed past here but obviously for you know what 95% of the game lads are dealt pretty much superbly with balls going in the box obviously a few saves as well.”

    Pete: “Yeah, no, no the back four brilliant, being brilliant even on Friday like there’s no I can’t have a go or shout or scream because everyone’s been brilliant. The lads in midfield, work their socks off so they protect us really well. So yeah, just I said, heartbreak conceding that late one at the end again.”

    Interviewer: “Yeah, I mean, I suppose the result kind of takes a bit of the shine off your goal as well a little bit. I mean, I doubt you woke up this morning expecting to score. You mentioned the conditions. Obviously, the winds just kind of took it as well. But obviously a strange one for you because like you said, in normal circumstances, it’d be one that you’d look back on with like the fond memories but obviously I suppose the result kind of takes a little bit off that as well.”

    Pete: “Yeah, massively obviously like as a goalkeeper you’re expecting to score so like I’d rather have three points and be going on the bus back home.

    “So yeah, really mixed emotions in that sense obviously I’ve never scored before but yeah it would have been nice because we’ve had a great travel and support day for them to go back but yeah we’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again on Saturday now.”

    Interviewer: “And you mentioned the travelling support as well. I don’t know exactly what the number was in terms of the fans that came here today, but obviously a couple of stands in the corner making noise throughout the game, even when it’s gone 2-1 at the end of the game, they’re making noise. Obviously they’re singing your name for quite a lot of it as well after the goal.”

    Pete: “Yeah, no, honestly, fantastic. Like the support’s been brilliant. Always singing, like could hear them behind us in the first half there, giving us some rally crying, like keeping the ball out the back of our nets. So brilliant, honestly. It means a lot to me and the lads as well. So, yeah. We stick together as a club and we go again on Saturday.”

    Interviewer: “Yeah, and you mentioned sticking together. How do you move forward now, obviously, to Saturday and another big game, obviously another one at home. But how do you look ahead to that? I suppose to try and put behind that kind of frustration of Friday and today behind you as well.”

    Pete: “Yeah, we’ll obviously we’ll review the game and we’ll go through it because there’s good bits and then there’s bits where we can be better at and then try and move that into training next week and make sure that it’s a positive week of training and that we’re improving as a team, as a collective, hopefully that will go well for us going forward.”

    Gateshead boss Lee Cattermole said: “Same messages as Friday. Good for the players. They were excellent. First half, had to dig in against the strong wind uphill, putting balls on top of us and held up to it. Done really well.

    “Second half, we scored first. And the eagle-eyed deflected the shot. Our goal was lucky as well, a unique goal, but conceded late to a corner. It was really, really disappointing, but effort to the players over the last two games have been outstanding and hopefully it will turn for us soon.”

    Interviewer: “In terms of the game plan in the first half, there’s a bit of a wind, think someone mentioned about it uphill even a little bit in first half, so it’s balls coming at you, obviously a lad to stand up to defend, was there any pleasing points on that point of view in terms of the game plan sticking to things like that? Or is it sort of over-oared by the frustration of the late goal at the minute?”

    Lee: “There’s so many positives, so many positives. To be in a game at half-time, then make our subs, we’re in a great position. But they’ve done that by the hard work they did in the first half.

    “Look, Harrogate have been in the league for five or six years, come down here wearing a bit of a transition period or whatever. We were very compacted here and Sutton, Harrogate over two games, outstanding performances, no points, absolutely devastated, very positive signs.”

    Interviewer: “And how does that move forward? Obviously, it’s not quite a week until the next game, but obviously Saturday coming up next. How do you look ahead to that? Obviously off the back of that Friday, Monday, well, like you say, you feel like you’ve had positives out of it, but the points just aren’t quite there yet.”

    Lee: “Listen, we just conceded in the 90th minute and we had a sucker punch on Friday as well. So we’ve got to have a day off and get the boys to refresh and just let the dust settle and then we’ll review it. And there’s loads of positives and loads of signs of us being a decent team. So listen, we’ve got to let it settle and hurt and suffer for a bit, but we’ll come back and we’ve made great games in first two games at home and I’m sure we’ll put up a decent performance next Saturday.”

    Interviewer: “And a positive obviously having the fans behind you as well, obviously quite a big number in terms of being a local game, obviously Bank Holiday, but making a lot of noise, start to finish even when it’s gone 2-1, obviously near the end of the game there, they’re still making a lot of noise and still showing appreciation for the players and likewise the other way around as well at end of the game.”

    Lee: “Yeah, definitely, we haven’t had that day yet where we’ve celebrated with them but I’m sure they’ve seen enough from the team in terms of commitment and effort and quality at times as well, you know, there’s nine new players in this year and new staff and changes and that but we’re going to get this right. I’ve got no doubt about it, the way we’re working and the signs I’m seeing I know we aren’t far away at all so coming weeks I’m sure you’ll see the best of us.”
