The public reaction told an entirely different story. Fans zeroed in on Benn looking completely drained, pointing out his sunken cheekbones, hollow eyes, and whether his chin can actually hold up against Garcia on September 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The alarm is justified. Benn looks nothing like the thick, muscular powerhouse who walked through two bouts against Chris Eubank Jr. His face appears gaunt, his expression looks strained, and the dense mass he carried at middleweight has withered into stringy muscle.

Single images rarely tell the whole physiological story. Still, seeing a fighter look this depleted weeks out from the official weigh-in raises immediate red flags, especially with more weight still left to shed before hitting the 147-pound mark.

    Four Years Away From Welterweight

At 29, Benn has not competed at the welterweight limit since 2022. His body has matured since then while his biggest fights have taken place much higher.

He weighed 156.4 pounds for his first meeting with Eubank and 159.3 for their November rematch. At middleweight, Benn was thick, energetic and physically powerful, particularly when he knocked Eubank down twice in the final round of their second fight.

Dropping to 149.5 pounds for Regis Prograis in April produced a much different appearance. Benn was alarmingly drawn when he weighed in even though the contracted limit was three pounds above welterweight. Removing another 2.5 pounds for Garcia asks more from a body that already seemed pushed too far at 150.

That number seems tiny on paper, yet those final pounds must be carved out after the body has already run out of easy water to lose. Stepping off the scale at 147 is only half the battle. Surviving the ring afterward is entirely different.

Benn cannot afford even a slight drop in pure physical horsepower. His entire identity relies on raw aggression, walking opponents down, and overpowering them inside the pocket. Pure boxing and defensive safety nets are not part of his repertoire. He does not know how to coast on the back foot to save energy. If boiling down leaves his legs heavy and his reaction time sluggish, the very engine that drives his success will stall against a lethal puncher.

Ryan is also the wrong opponent for Benn to face under those conditions. His fast left hook is most dangerous against an opponent moving forward with reduced reactions. The WBC champion has made the welterweight limit for two consecutive fights, weighing 146.8 pounds against Rolando Romero and 146.5 against Mario Barrios. Benn is trying to return to a weight he has not reached in four years.

Junior middleweight may be the sensible home for him now. It would allow Benn to retain more of the strength developed during his middleweight run without surrendering such a large size advantage to full middleweights. The WBC belt has pulled him beneath that natural compromise and into a weight class his current appearance suggests he has outgrown.

Instead, Benn is returning to 147 through an immediate WBC title opportunity. No recent work within the weight class established that he can still function effectively there. His first welterweight bout in four years comes against a champion with the speed and left hook to exploit slow reactions or reduced punch resistance.

That reality turns Garcia versus Benn into a peculiar championship matchup. The event operates purely as a commercial spectacle between two famous names, decorated with a world title belt. Benn secured this shot through drawing power outside the welterweight ranks rather than genuine divisional achievements inside them.

Ring Magazine posted those images to highlight Benn working hard in camp. The photos might simply reveal the physical price he has to pay instead.

The September 12 clash between Garcia and Benn streams live on Paramount+ in the United States and DAZN in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Organizers have not released the official start time.
