That hostility did not start with Benn. Garcia has criticized Crawford repeatedly. He questioned the quality of Crawford’s opposition and argued that he retired without facing the younger fighters coming behind him. Crawford later picked Benn to defeat Garcia. He also warned that Garcia may get knocked out if his preparation is not serious.
The exchange therefore looks less like an unexplained act of disloyalty than the latest response in a long history between them. Garcia spent years trying to pull Crawford into a fight. Crawford has now publicly taken Benn’s side, and Garcia is calling him a hater.
Can Benn Apply Crawford’s Advice?
Even if Crawford understands how Benn should approach Garcia, explaining a tactic is easier than carrying it out under pressure. Benn normally relies on aggression, physical strength and combinations at close range. He is not known for waiting patiently and building an entire fight around counters.
Any guidance from Crawford would have to fit the fighter Benn already is. Trying to imitate Crawford’s measured style could leave Benn hesitant against Garcia’s speed. Returning to his usual aggression would bring him directly into range of Garcia’s left hook.
The dismissal of Crawford’s influence is therefore not baseless. Identifying openings from outside the ring is one thing. Benn must recognize them while punches are coming back.
Garcia Trusts Only His Own Team
In Garcia’s view, boxing relationships are temporary. Fighters should depend only on the people inside their own camps.
“There’s no friends in boxing. I learned that at heart. I hung out with Floyd before. I hung out with everybody. I learned very quick. No friends in boxing, bro. Stick to yourself. Have your team, and that’s it. Move forward.”
That outlook helps explain why Crawford’s appearance bothered him. Garcia does not see it as a harmless meeting between fighters. He sees another major name choosing Benn’s side.
There is also a danger in giving Crawford too much attention. He will not be standing across the ring on September 12. Benn will, and his pressure requires Garcia’s full concentration. Turning Crawford into an additional target may motivate Garcia, but it also gives him something else to think about during fight week.
Feeling isolated often gives Garcia energy. Crawford’s support for Benn fits that mentality perfectly. The test is keeping the grievance useful without allowing it to distract him from the man he actually has to beat.
