Yoane Wissa insisted Newcastle United are “ready to fight for everything” this season as they prepare to take on Tottenham in the Premier League.

The Magpies started their league campaign with a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St. James’ Park, with Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a penalty deep into stoppage time for the Reds.

Wissa impressed in the victory, recording one assist while also leading his team-mates in shots (four), duels won (11/19) and fouls won (four).

The Newcastle striker, who also operated in a deeper role against Liverpool, believes their performance last time out highlights their resilience.

“This gives us lot of confidence,” Wissa told BBC Newcastle. We showed that we are ready to fight for everything.

“The main focus will be to not to lose many games and be ready for the league. It is going to be a difficult season but we are ready for that.”

Wissa also praised Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe at the helm earlier this summer.

“It has been a lot of work for him,” added Wissa.

“We have had a lot of meetings to understand how he wants us to play.

“We showed that we all understand how he thinks about football and it was unlucky that we drew at the end. I wanted to win for him.”

Spurs, meanwhile, fell to a humbling 3-0 defeat at Brentford to begin their Premier League campaign.

However, they continued their summer spending with the signing of Savio for a reported £85m on Tuesday.

“In terms of one-to-one, he’s one of the best players, can play on either side,” Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi said about Savio.

“If you analyse the best wingers in the world, they score 10-15 goals a season and he has the qualities.

“Maybe it’s a habit and he had to get the habit. We need to increase the chances to score. The best teams score lots of goals.”

    PLAYERS TO WATCH

    Tottenham – Marcos Senesi

Marcos Senesi ranked top for Spurs for successful passes (75), duels won (12), and tackles (five) in their 3-0 defeat to Brentford.

His 75 successful passes were the most by a Spurs player on their Premier League debut on record (since 2003-04).

    Newcastle United – Anthony Elanga

Anthony Elanga has already scored more goals (one from two shots) in the 2026-27 campaign than he managed in 2025-26 (0 from 17 shots).

Elanga made the most sprints of any winger across MD1 this season (23).

    MATCH PREDICTION – TOTTENHAM WIN

Spurs have won their opening home league game in each of the last five seasons by an aggregate score of 14-1. Only once before have they had a longer run, winning their home opener 11 times in succession from 1923-24 to 1933-34.

Spurs have not lost their opening two Premier League games in a season since the 2011-12 campaign, while they last failed to score in their first two games in 1992-93.

And goals should be expected in this clash; there has been at least one goal scored in all 62 Premier League meetings between Spurs and Newcastle, making it the most played fixture in the competition never to finish 0-0.

Newcastle have won more Premier League away against Spurs than at any other opponent (13), winning three of their last four visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (L1).

Spurs have lost six of their last eight Premier League games against Newcastle (W1 D1), and have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 14 against the Magpies.

However, Newcastle have only won four of their last 22 away Premier League matches (D6 L12), but their last two away wins have been in London – 2-1 at Spurs in February and 1-0 at Chelsea in March.

    OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

    Tottenham – 43.5%

    Draw – 25%

    Newcastle United – 31.5%
