WBO Lets Emanuel Navarrete Delay Charly Suarez Again

Charly Suarez has received a rotten deal from the WBO. The mandatory challenger has already waited more than a year for a rematch opportunity against Emanuel Navarrete, yet the sanctioning body has now allowed the champion to face O’Shaquie Foster first.

“Please be advised that the WBO World Championship Committee has unanimously approved an exception allowing WBO Jr. Lightweight Champion Emanuel Navarrete to pursue the WBO/IBF/WBC Unification Championship against O’Shaquie Foster prior to discharging his mandatory obligation.

“As a condition of this approval, the winner must next face the WBO Mandatory Challenger within 180 days following the Unification Championship Contest,” Olivieri posted on X.

That condition sounds protective, but it may leave Suarez waiting until April 2027 before the deadline expires. He turned 38 this month and will be approaching his 39th birthday by then. At this stage of his career, every additional month carries a cost.

Suarez cannot safely remain inactive for that entire period. Taking a stay-busy bout would expose him to an injury or defeat that may wipe out his title opportunity. Remaining on the sidelines protects his ranking but wastes what little time he has left.

The arrangement may become worse if Foster defeats Navarrete. Foster would own three belts and may seek a commercially rich unification rather than face an older mandatory challenger with limited drawing power. A WBO vacancy would likely send Suarez into a title contest against a younger opponent without receiving the Navarrete payday he earned.

Victory for Navarrete offers no guarantee either. The Mexican champion may surrender the WBO belt if the organization refuses another exception, allowing him to pursue a larger purse against a more popular opponent.

Suarez earned his mandatory position after his May 2025 fight with Navarrete ended in a technical draw because of an accidental clash of heads. Instead of receiving an immediate second meeting, he has watched the champion move forward while his own career remains frozen.

The WBO’s 180-day condition provides the organization with cover, but it does little for Suarez. He is carrying all the risk while Navarrete and Foster receive the three-belt fight. In practical terms, the mandatory challenger has been given the brush-off.
