Brentford fans taunt Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham with a number of chants during the Bees’ 3-0 win on the opening weekend.

12 minutes in, Brentford took the lead, the club record signing Mamadou Sangare played a one-two, got himself into the box and squared to Keane Lewis-Potter with an easy finish.

Keith Andrews’ side doubled their lead just after the half hour mark, Mathias Jensen with a shot at Antonin Kinsky, who dropped it towards Vitaly Janelt, who then rolled the ball home from close range.

Just minutes into the second half, Brentford made it three, Michael Kayode fired home also on the rebound after being parried by Kinsky.

On the 53rd minute, Rodrigo Bentancur, who had been brought on to try and help spark a comeback for Spurs, but then bundled down Kevin Schade, the resulting penalty hit the post, a stuttered run-up sent Kinsky the wrong way but the finish was all wrong.

Brentford fans enjoyed what they were saying, chanting “That’s why you’re going down” along with the following…

“You’re going down with the Fulham”

“What a waste of money” about Tonali

“He’s better than you, he’s better than you. Thomas Frank, he’s better than you”

“”You’re getting sacked in the morning”

    “Is there a fire drill”

“Tottenham get battered everywhere they go”

“Thomas Frank is smarter than you”

Tottenham head coach Roberto de Zerbi said to Sky Sports:

“We suffered physically but we knew that before the game. We were not ready to fight the duels, we made a lot of mistakes in the timing of the pressure with Mikey Moore on the left centre-back.

“We arrived late too many times late, but then we lost too many duels to compete with Brentford. I’m sorry for that, I’m sorry for the defeat.

“I know we have to improve in the physical condition, we have to improve in the organisation because there were many new players. But it’s the first game, it’s the part of our journey.

“We knew before the game that with a lot of new players, to become a team we need two things: soul and style of play. Today I think there was the soul, but in the end we didn’t fight in the right way for the difference of the duels. Brentford is one of the most important teams in the Premier League n terms of duels. But a fair game.

“I believe in my players. It was a game, especially in the first half in one direction, we were in the right position with high pressure – I said with Mikey Moore. If you analyse the game, you can see how many duels we lost in the first half. The direction of the game went towards Brentford.

Is this a team who is going to compete at the bottom of the table again? “I think no. We didn’t remember last season, but all these players are good people and people with values and memory. But we lost too many duels. One of the best qualities of Brentford is the one-to-one, the man-to-man and the set pieces.

“The first XI was able to compete. Normally, if the game went in this way, now we can say a lot of things. But I don’t lose confidence in the players and these people. We have to work, to improve, to analyse better the game and to find the improvement.

“We have to analyse this game. We can’t destroy everything because we are working well. We are improving the physical condition. It is not all at the same point because a lot of players started the season late like Senesi, Bergvall and a lot of players.

“But I don’t want excuses, stay focused on the improvement we have to do. The first one is to find the right spirit to fight. Today, not maybe the spirit, but we were not right to fight.

Did he expect better? “Better? For sure. I didn’t expect this result. But I knew the problems we could find today. Especially in the duels, like I said.”

Brentford’s Keith Andrews said to Sky Sports:

“I’ve been through enough to know – as good as I was feeling about where we were – you never truly know. You never truly know about the opposition, the intensity of those games from watching on our laptops and meetings we have around it, but I’m really happy with what we produced.

“It was just us. Just us from the first whistle. It was intensive, relentless, filled with a way of playing that’s difficult to play against. It was filled with individual quality and personality which I really really loved. What underlined it all was the togetherness which we have in abundance.

On Sangare: “I think he’s a top player, there’s no doubt about it. He was the one we were after in the window and the club deserve a lot of credit for the work they did. It was really important that we tried to get him over the line.

“He deserves a lot of credit because he could have potentially gone elsewhere – potentially for a few more bob! – but he realised this was a good place for him to come.

“When you bring in a really good player, it brings the level of the team up in terms of the knock on effect to that, the front line and the protection of the back four.

“It’s a long, long season and we need strength in depth. We have that in our position.

“I’m really comfortable with where we are and the journey we’re on. There are going to be bumps in the rad, it’s the soap opera of football. But let’s enjoy the journey.”

“He’s been unbelievable, I can’t praise him high enough”

Here’s the social media reaction after Brentford fans taunt Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham with chants during the Bees’ 3-0 win…

@TottenhamMasky: I hate to say it but well done, you were the better side by a country mile. Outplayed us completely.

@tb_sports_fan: Utter dominance! Offense looked incredible. Let the doubters keep doubting us. First time Bees fan but definitely a lifetime supporter after today. Could not be more impressed with this squad. #COYB 🐝

@CameronWebb1998: Something special is happening this season! We are genuinely a top 7 team now. I know spurs almost got relegated last season. But to win 3:0 comfortably today shows character! Chief Kieth is getting us Europe! You beeeeees 🐝

@1882__THFC: Just came to say well played,, you were the better team in every part of the pitch. You played as a team and could’ve easily won by more.. No excuses here. Good luck for rest of the season

@historyofTHFC: We begin with our heaviest opening day defeat post war equalling the 0-3 defeat to @ManUtd in 2011 and @BlackpoolFC in 1950. Only surpassed in 1931 with defeat to @Wolves 0-4. Well played to @BrentfordFC for showing the fight and committment we failed to today. @SpursOfficial

@DPatz13: Far too easy for Brentford. Roberto De Zerbi has a lot of work to do trying to gel all these new players at Spurs. Mamadou Sangare will hit the headlines a lot this season, think Brentford have done great business getting him from Lens #BRETOT #BrentfordFC #COYS

@rayverma: Every @SpursOfficial player who played in today’s game and contributed to our downfall, should donate their wages to charity. Absolutely shambolic on every level. I’ve seen better defending on Wanstead Flats. Shameful. Pathetic. Why? @BrentfordFC you were fantastic. 🐝 #BRETOT

@LFCJFT_97: I owe Keith Andrews an apology Thought it was a strange decision, when appointed. Did great last season. And you look even better today. Strong performance

    Well… 🤭

Where to start with that? Back to front, KLP outstanding. Sangaré… what a player we have on our hands – ran the show from minute one. Janelt and Jensen next to him with close to perfect games too.

Front three a constant threat but Igor will sadly never beat the… https://t.co/68LxxkG6bU pic.twitter.com/DLhU7s6ckc
