The question of squad depth across that extended run is where Bruce sees the real test lying. Making the Champions League was the achievement. Sustaining a title push alongside it is the next, much harder, challenge.

Whatever reservations Bruce holds about United’s title ceiling, his view of Carrick as a manager is warm and specific. He praised Carrick for the clarity of his approach, particularly his decision to play a back four and simplify the team’s structure, and noted that the players have visibly responded.
“He’s come in and steadied the ship in his own way. He’s put his stamp on them and he’s played in a certain way which is very simple,” Bruce said.
The contrast with Ruben Amorim, Carrick’s predecessor, was pointed. Bruce, who won three league titles playing in United’s defence during the club’s dominant years, suggested Amorim’s attachment to his own system became a liability when results deteriorated.
“The last manager seemed to be just obsessed with the way he wanted to play and it wasn’t working. He seemed reluctant to change what he wanted to do which is fair enough, but certainly Michael has come in, played a back four and been very simple in what he’s done, but the players have responded to it.”
