“People look at me and think, ‘He’s been at that level and we think maybe he’s over the hill.’ I’ve been around a while. People who I look up to in recent years are the likes of Kiko Martinez. He fought at a high level to the very end, and he got to decide when he was done. That’s how I feel about it. Boxing gives me and my family a great life, and I get to decide when I’m done,” Hughes said during the launch press conference.

Those two defeats halted a three-fight winning run that had restored Hughes’ position following losses to George Kambosos Jr. and William Zepeda.

The majority decision against Kambosos in July 2023 was questionable. There was nothing controversial about the Zepeda result eight months later. The Mexican overwhelmed Hughes with relentless volume, forcing his corner to stop the fight after four rounds. Three victories followed against Efstathios Antonas, Gary Cully, and Archie Sharp.

A recent majority-decision loss to Bakhodur Usmonov was followed by a five-round defeat against Pierce O’Leary after Hughes moved to light welterweight on two weeks’ notice.

Matchroom did not choose the Yorkshireman because it views him as completely finished. His experience, movement, and awkward style make him good enough to test Visioli. His limitations make the risk acceptable.

If Hughes possessed Zepeda’s destructive offense or Andy Cruz’s exceptional ability, Matchroom would not place a 23-year-old prospect with only 11 professional fights anywhere near him. That would be matchmaking suicide. Hughes represents a calculated test: respected enough to make a victory valuable, yet manageable enough to protect the promotion’s plans for Visioli.

Producing the upset requires more than nicking close rounds. Hughes must make the fight grueling, force Visioli to maintain his pace late, and punish the mistakes that begin to surface as the rounds accumulate.

None of Visioli’s previous opponents had Hughes’ experience against high-level competition. We do not know how the young lightweight will react if Hughes takes him into the later rounds and lands the same sharp counters that troubled Cully, Sharp, and Kambosos.

Those shots may not carry Zepeda-level power, but they can accumulate against a prospect who has never faced this type of resistance. Matchroom understands what Hughes can and cannot do. How Visioli responds when its carefully selected stepping stone refuses to cooperate remains unknown.
