La Liga: Gameweek 1 Preview – Where the Numbers Point

Spanish football is back, and the opening weekend provides the first opportunity to test where last season’s numbers might point us towards an early betting edge.

But these initial fixtures always require a degree of caution. New managers, promoted teams, tactical changes and summer transfers mean we’re dealing with sides that may look very different from those that produced last season’s data.

But that doesn’t make the numbers irrelevant—quite the opposite.

They can help identify where performances may have been more sustainable than the results suggested, where significant overperformance could regress and, importantly, where the projected probabilities might be underestimating the difference between two teams.

And three fixtures stand out – Bet on La Liga with William Hill.

    Racing Santander vs Villarreal

The visitors are given only a 38% chance of winning at newly promoted Racing Santander, and that feels surprisingly cautious given the gulf in proven quality between the two sides.

Villarreal scored 72 goals last season, the third-highest in La Liga. However, I do urge caution, as the Yellow Submarine overperformed its expected goals by +12.96, the biggest in the division.

Maintaining that level of finishing is unlikely. But Villarreal may also be evolving.

Last season they were heavily reliant on transitions, averaging just 44.5% possession while scoring 12 goals from direct attacks… and the new manager, Íñigo Pérez, could add another dimension.

His Rayo Vallecano side averaged 53.4% possession and recorded a 9.9 PPDA per 90, indicating a much more aggressive press than Villarreal’s 15.1. Rayo also converted 17.2% of their high turnovers into shots, compared with Villarreal’s 10.6%.

But Pérez has indicated that he doesn’t intend to overhaul Villarreal’s existing system completely. And that could be significant.

Rather than removing the transition threat that made them so dangerous, he has the opportunity to make Villarreal more proactive and less predictable.

There is also a regression argument on the other side.

Racing generated 1.62 xG per game last season but scored 2.14 goals, outperforming expectations by an enormous +0.52 goals per match. That level of efficiency was impressive in the second tier. Repeating it against considerably stronger opposition will be much more difficult.

    There is historical context too.

Racing will be playing their first La Liga fixture since 2011/12, and the occasion should generate a huge atmosphere. Still, the tactical speed, quality, and intensity of the top flight represent a very different challenge.

    Player to Watch: Alberto Moleiro

His finishing numbers suggest some regression is possible, but his broader attacking contribution makes the 22-year-old much more than simply a goalscorer.

    Betting Angle: Villarreal

Racing’s attacking numbers contain significant overperformance, while Villarreal bring Champions League-level quality and potentially a more proactive tactical approach under Pérez.

    Espanyol vs Levante

Espanyol’s opening fixture offers another interesting angle.

They finished four places and four points above Levante last season and have home advantage against a side that managed only four away victories in 2025/26.

But the most important change could be in Levante’s attack.

Replacing Carlos Espí, who earned a summer move to Real Madrid after scoring 11 league goals last season, will be difficult. Those goals came from just 7.83 xG, meaning Espí outperformed his expected metrics while converting 19.3% of his shots.

Losing that efficiency is particularly problematic because Levante struggles to convert their opportunities: just 47 goals from 52.76 xG.

Now remove a player responsible for almost a quarter of those goals — and their most clinical finisher — and Levante have a sizeable attacking hole to fill.

Espanyol, meanwhile, possess an attacking focal point of their own: Roberto Fernández.

The Spaniard finished last season with a team-high 10 goal involvements, while creating 18 chances and six big chances. Fernández doesn’t possess the headline numbers of La Liga’s elite, but this looks like the type of fixture in which his profile could be important.

    Betting Angle: Espanyol

Home advantage, Levante’s poor away record and the departure of Espí all strengthen the case for the hosts, while Levante’s potential attacking problems also make their scoring output worth watching.

    Celta Vigo vs Osasuna

The Balaídos was hardly a fortress last season, and Celta Vigo’s 1.21 points per home game hardly screams banker in the opener.

But Osasuna were considerably worse on their travels, winning only two of 19 games on the road, and collecting a meagre 10 points all season.

There is also a significant difference in continuity.

Claudio Giráldez remains in charge at Celta after extending his contract through 2028, while Osasuna begin the campaign under new manager Luis Miguel Ramis.

That transition comes alongside the loss of Víctor Muñoz, who contributed seven goals and five assists before moving to Liverpool. And for a team that only scored 44 league goals in 2025/26, losing a player of his attacking quality is significant.

Then we have the broader quality gap – Celta finished sixth with 54 points, while Osasuna only beat the drop on goal difference…

    Player to Watch: Borja Iglesias

Scorer of 14 La Liga goals from 10.45 xG. His finishing was exceptional, hitting 26 of 46 attempts on target, with a conversion rate of 30.43%.

Against an Osasuna side that struggled badly away from home last season, the Sky Blues have plenty in their favour.

    Betting Angle: Celta Vigo

The projected 47% Celta win looks reasonable, but their home record prevents this from being an automatic selection…

Overall, Round 1 is not the moment to go big, but it can still provide value where last season’s underlying numbers, squad changes and tactical context all point in the same direction. Villarreal bring the strongest top-flight quality edge, Espanyol look well placed to exploit Levante’s attacking uncertainty, and Celta’s continuity gives them a clear advantage over an Osasuna side adjusting to change. None of these angles are without risk at this stage, but each offers a logical starting point for identifying where the early prices may be slightly too cautious.
