Everything changed after Dempsey destroyed Jess Willard on July 4, 1919. The heavyweight championship turned Dempsey into one of America’s biggest sports celebrities. His fights generated enormous gates. Movies and endorsements brought him even more money. He also became part of Hollywood’s social world.
The fighter who once struggled financially could now afford mansions and a lifestyle that would have been unimaginable during his early years. Boxing gradually occupied less of his time.
After defeating Georges Carpentier in July 1921, Dempsey went nearly two years without defending his championship. He returned to beat Tommy Gibbons in July 1923 before surviving a wild fight with Luis Ángel Firpo two months later.
Dempsey was only 28 after stopping Firpo, an age when a heavyweight champion might normally be approaching his best years. Instead, he didn’t have another official fight for nearly three years.
During that period, Dempsey’s celebrity continued growing. Hollywood remained part of his life; he participated in exhibitions, and in 1925 he married actress Estelle Taylor. His relationship with longtime manager Jack “Doc” Kearns also ended bitterly.
The contrast with the hungry fighter who had pursued Willard was striking. Dempsey no longer needed to fight regularly to make money or establish his name. Boxing had already given him financial security and national fame.
When Dempsey finally returned to defend against Gene Tunney on September 23, 1926, he was 31 and hadn’t competed in an official bout since Firpo.
Tunney took advantage, outboxing Dempsey over 10 rounds to win a unanimous decision and the heavyweight championship. The inactivity shouldn’t be used to diminish Tunney’s accomplishment. Tunney was an exceptional fighter who defeated Dempsey again in their famous 1927 “Long Count” rematch.
But the larger question remains: what might Dempsey’s career have looked like if wealth and celebrity hadn’t pulled him so far from regular competition? Dempsey became champion at 24. By his late twenties, he had money, mansions, movie work, and access to a world far removed from the one that created the Manassa Mauler.
Success didn’t destroy Jack Dempsey. It gave him the life he had fought to obtain. The price was that boxing no longer demanded everything from him.
