George Foreman proved he belonged among boxing’s rising elite on August 4, 1970, battering George Chuvalo into a third-round stoppage before 12,526 fans at Madison Square Garden in New York. Referee Arthur Mercante halted the bout at 1:41 of the third round, giving the 21-year-old Olympic gold medalist the biggest victory of his young professional career.

The matchup paired one of boxing’s most feared young heavyweights with one of the division’s toughest veterans. Chuvalo had shared the ring with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Jerry Quarry, Floyd Patterson and many other top figures without ever suffering a knockdown. Foreman, meanwhile, carried a growing reputation for frightening power but still needed a signature victory against an established opponent.

Behind a crushing left jab that repeatedly snapped Chuvalo’s head backward, Foreman quickly established control. Every punch seemed to carry unusual force as the younger heavyweight stalked forward, bullied his opponent around the ring and mixed heavy right hands with clubbing hooks. Chuvalo attempted to answer with body shots and hooks of his own, but he simply could not sustain offense against the superior size, strength and reach opposite him.

Early in the third round, the decisive sequence arrived. A powerful left staggered Chuvalo, leaving him badly shaken along the ropes. Foreman immediately unloaded a relentless barrage, driving his opponent around the ring with unanswered right hands and left hooks. Blood spilled from Chuvalo’s mouth while he covered up under the prolonged assault.

Mercante stepped between the fighters after manager Irving Ungerman climbed onto the ring apron to protest the physical toll taken by his fighter. Although Chuvalo angrily argued the stoppage and believed he deserved the opportunity to continue, the stoppage was understandable given the volume of unanswered punches. Known for giving competitors every reasonable chance to fight back, Mercante’s intervention made the decision all the more telling.

Foreman earned $17,500, the largest purse of his career to that point, while Chuvalo received a guaranteed $50,000. The victory moved Foreman another step toward a heavyweight title shot. Less than three years later, he demolished Joe Frazier to capture the undisputed championship.

The defeat only reinforced Chuvalo’s legendary durability. Despite absorbing one of the fiercest beatings of his career, he never touched the canvas. The stoppage became only the second inside-the-distance loss in a career spanning 93 professional fights, adding another chapter to the remarkable toughness that made him one of boxing’s most respected competitors.
