Scott Lindsey responds to boos and chants from York City fans after a Carabao Cup Preliminary Round defeat to Crawley Town.

Gianmarco Di Biase and Danilo Orsi were on the scoresheet at the York Community Stadium, Crawley booking a place in the First Round, an away trip to Watford.

Both sides also struck the woodwork, Crawley’s Stephen Duke-McKenna against the post and Zech Medley against the crossbar.

It was Scott Lindsey’s first game in charge of the Minstermen, and by the end of it, faced ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ chants.

York fans also sang “Stuart Maynard’s Barmy Army” and “We Want Maynard Back” towards the end of the game, still left angry by the departure their title winning manager who was sacked last week.

Interviewer: You said so was done Saturday that you needed to win this game? The reaction at end of the game? Were you surprised? The reaction during the game? Is it what you expected?

Scott Lindsey: Is what it is. you know, we’ve just got to… Listen, rule number one as a football manager, football coach, win games. And I’ve lost one tonight, so I’m trying to the next one, right?

Interviewer: Yeah. But how do you feel when they’re shouting, you’re sat in the morning, both sets of fans and the crowd are having a go and they’re singing Stuart Maynard’s Barmy Army. Did you sort of expect that to be case?

Scott Lindsey: I absolutely don’t care. It’s what it is. Honestly, so thick skinned, it will never get through to me. It’s like I’m here to do a job and I will carry on doing that job and the minute I let it come through to me will be the minute that I won’t be able to do my job properly. So absolutely fine and normal.

Interviewer: They were boos as well because you didn’t go and applaud them at the end. I completely understand why you maybe wouldn’t do because the reaction that would happen would be pretty unfair I think. Did that ever cross your mind to go and applaud them at end of the game?

Scott Lindsey: Obviously I’ve got to win them over. So I’m not going to mug myself off by going over there and then getting pelted. So I’ve got to win them over. I understand how football works.

Interviewer: OK, your team tonight, tell us how you picked these starting 11. I just felt that I remember Banksy playing for Chesterfield years ago, really deep and really controlling the game. I he was probably close to being our best player tonight. I thought he was excellent. he really dictated the play. So him being in that deeper role gives us a strength in getting the ball and knitting it together with the 10s and I really like Joe Grey and them in that 10 position. I think he finds pockets really well and again I thought he was so the two changes that I made in terms of what’s been going on before I thought probably them two was our strongest two players. And of course, I’ve got to also look at minutes that have been played before. you know, these boys, probably Jack Hunt and Pearcy was the only two that started in the game before. And I thought it was a strong team.”

Only 80 minutes into his first game as #YCFC coach and Scott Lindsey has “you’re getting sacked in the morning” sung to him.

Really says it all. Just because you make a decent signing doesn’t change the fact you’ve lost our trust @matt_uggla @UgglaAnne29485 #ycfc pic.twitter.com/cRMVJryVPs

Here’s how fans reacted as Scott Lindsey responds to boos and chants from York fans after cup defeat to Crawley…

@Jugger21000: Sorry York fans 🥹 this looks shit for you all! You won the league ..have momentum and everyone of you is upbeat and bouncing… Then this.. what even is this? Why would any rational owner replace a manager that has the players and fans 100% on board? Weird!

@MikePannettJesus: H. Christ. A car crash of an interview. York City needs to recruit a crisis communications expert.

@JordanYCFC: I know he’s almost been put in an impossible situation (which is not his fault at all), but he already sounds like he’s on a 10 game losing streak and about to lose his job + sounds extremely unlikable #ycfc

@roguez9: Ok this is a terrible interview – wtf has happened to us in such a short space of time

@LewisField01: All Maynard’s hard work undone. 7 from last season in the starting 11 and they look like they’ve never played together

@yorkiejf: Not his fault but this is the worst he’s spoken since he took over.

@TheWelshYork: 40 competitive games ago was the last time we didn’t score…

@FuManChuCaChu: It looked like the players had never met each other before. Absolutely shocking performance.

    @cologinokeel:
1st half – unorganised off the ball.
    2nd half – better.
Final ball – woeful, cost us.
    McNally looks good.
Akinyemi needs 4 touches to control the ball.
    Medley can’t track a man.
Chants RE Maynard are so disrespectful toward Lindsey in his 1st game, it’s not his fault.
    #ycfc

@WillCrisp13: Pretty damning Crawley on a fraction of our budget can find a quality looking Juve academy striker whose goal made the difference while we have matt’s pal Dipo starting who wasn’t good enough for the national league never mind league 2

@RobGWarren4: You have to say that York sacking their title winning gaffer for Scott Lindsey, for his first game to be a home defeat to his old club, is fantastic script writing.

@Sam_Hendry14: Cheers Uggla, great watch. Really exciting football. Can’t wait for the rest of the season!

@JackForster0410: Destroyed absolutely everything that took years to build. Absolutely miserable football, miserable atmosphere, what an absolute mess we are in.

@Moody_Chops: Rewind a few short weeks & there was such a feel good factor around the club & so much positivity. Complete opposite now, thanks to one crazy decision

@biggins_louis: How the hell did medley get man of the match , joe grey all day long least he showed some urgency !
