Xabi Alonso has spoken a little about signing players and building the right culture at Chelsea in an interview today.

Xabi Alonso has given his first in depth interview as Chelsea boss, and there was some really interesting stuff in there about the “culture” he’s looking to build at Stamford Bridge.

The arrival of 35 year old Danny Welbeck – who is expected to be followed by 36 year old Jordan Henderson – shows a dramatic change in strategy at the club, and it seems Alonso is pushing for that. Although he himself said there’s more to it than just signing veteran players.

Alonso on getting the “right balance” of personalities in Chelsea squad

“For me, you need the right balance of personalities, of maturity stages, early twenties with early thirties and in between, players in different stages of their careers. There’s not a formula for that, but there is a feeling for that,” the manager explained.

Fans have been crying out for some older, more experienced players all along, and now it seems like they’ll get them. There is still much work to be done on a squad which desperately disappointed last year, and Alonso will need to work with the players who are already around as well as the new faces to get everyone going in the same direction.

    In other news…

Xabi Alonso was promised backing in the transfer market and the power to pick players – and it looks like he’s got it.

Alonso also spoke about Mykhailo Mudryk and what the club are planning to do to help integrate him after 18 months out of the game.
