One of WWE’s biggest women’s storylines almost went live without a script. Brie Bella has revealed that moments before her memorable confrontation with Stephanie McMahon in 2014, everything changed backstage, forcing the two to figure it out on the fly just seconds before walking through the curtain.
Speaking on What’s Your Story?, Brie looked back at the segment that ended with her slapping Stephanie and quitting WWE. According to her, the original plan kept getting rewritten until they were standing in Gorilla Position waiting for their entrance. That’s when Vince McMahon reportedly stepped in with another change.
“Do you remember how the script kept changing? And then we’re in Gorilla and your dad was like, ‘Wait, I think it should be something else.’ And you were kind of like, ‘What?’ And then you looked at Bryan and I and you go, ‘You know what? I’m just going to ask you guys questions. Just answer them. And we know, Brie, at the end, you’re quitting.’”
Stephanie admitted she doesn’t even remember that specific moment, but said situations like that were anything but unusual during her time on WWE television. Instead of worrying about memorizing a rewritten script, the goal was simply knowing where the segment needed to finish.
“We knew what we needed to end with… You didn’t have a choice because that was not unusual for promos to change last minute. You just have to be able to go with it.”
Brie said that confidence made the whole situation work, especially with Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) involved. The storyline had already been building for months, giving Stephanie and Bryan a natural chemistry that made improvising much easier.
Stephanie agreed, saying the dynamic between them had become one of WWE’s strongest stories at the time.
“We had such a story for so long. It was the best, and he was like the man of the people… and we were the evil, evil authority.”
Brie also admitted she was so focused on one key moment—that famous slap—that she immediately realized she’d connected harder than expected.
“I do remember my one spot was ‘I quit,’ slap, and I just think I concentrated too hard on it because I know when I slapped, I was like, ‘Oh s***.”
Fortunately, Stephanie was ready for it: “My teeth were locked. It was good because I was prepared for that one.”
Looking back more than a decade later, the segment remains one of the defining moments of the Bella Twins’ WWE run—even if the people involved barely knew what they were going to say until seconds before they walked out on live television.
