CM Punk isn’t looking at his upcoming Undisputed WWE Championship defense against Cody Rhodes as a one-and-done affair.
Ahead of their blockbuster showdown at SummerSlam, the champion admitted that while he’s confident of leaving Minneapolis with the title, he doesn’t believe one match will be enough to settle their increasingly personal rivalry.
Punk shared his thoughts while training with former WWE Champion Big E. He offered a glimpse into his mindset before one of the biggest matches of the year.
CM Punk expects Cody Rhodes feud to continue after SummerSlam
In a new WWE YouTube video, Punk joined Big E for an intense leg workout before his SummerSlam title defense. During one of the exercises, Punk joked, “Ah, this one’s for Cody,” prompting Big E to ask what fans would be talking about once the match was over.
Punk acknowledged that nothing is guaranteed once the bell rings.
“It’s a hard question to answer because I’m confident I’ll win, but I’m also wise enough to know that it could go either way.”
He added that overconfidence could prove costly.
“I don’t want to be on the other side of it, thinking my hubris is what got me the L. Anybody can beat anybody one time.”
Despite that uncertainty, Punk believes the rivalry is only beginning.
“I think, win, lose, or draw, what people are gonna be talking about is they’re gonna have to see that again ’cause I don’t know if one match is gonna settle anything.”
The champion compared the rivalry’s potential to some of wrestling’s most celebrated rivalries.
“They’re gonna be talking about this like they talk about a Steamboat-Flair or a Bret-Austin. We’re both too good, too proud, too disciplined, and too at the top of our game to let this be a one-and-done.”
Punk concluded by saying that even if Rhodes defeats him, he would shake his hand before immediately asking for another match because he believes Rhodes would want the same.
The Undisputed WWE Championship match headlines Night One of SummerSlam on August 1 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Whether Punk’s prediction comes true remains to be seen. Nevertheless, he clearly believes this rivalry has enough fuel to go well beyond a single main event. So, the final bell could prove to be the opening round.
