For 30 years, The Undertaker and Vince McMahon worked side by side. Their dynamic built one of the most successful partnerships in wrestling history. But even though they had a strong relationship, The Undertaker recently revealed there was only one time when McMahon admitted he had made the wrong creative call.

Speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker looked back at a disagreement they had while planning the Punjabi Prison Match at WWE The Great American Bash 2006. McMahon won the argument at the time. However, after the match, he admitted that The Undertaker’s idea would have played out better.

The Undertaker and Vince McMahon disagreed over the Punjabi Prison Match

The match was originally supposed to be The Undertaker vs. The Great Khali. However, Khali was unable to compete, so Big Show took his place.

While planning the match, Taker came up with a different way to end one of the biggest spots. Instead of escaping through the cage door, he wanted to jump from the inner cage to the outer cage, believing it would create an unforgettable moment.

However, Taker recalled that McMahon wanted the wrestlers to fight through the gate before escaping.

“I will give you an argument that I fought and I lost, but this was the only time that he ever came back to me and said that I was right and he was actually wrong. Out of 30 years, there was one time. That was the Punjabi Prison match. It was originally supposed to be with Khali, but Khali had something going on, and they put Big Show in the match. Vince had this idea about he wanted us going through the gate while we were fighting and that’s how I would get out of the cage,” Taker said.

Taker tried to convince McMahon that his version would surprise the fans and look much better.

“I  had the idea that I wanted to jump from the inner cage to the outer cage and get out that way. I thought, ‘Man, that would be such a cool visual. They won’t expect it. It’ll look amazing.’ And we went at it, and back and forth. It finally got to the point where, ‘I don’t wanna hear anything else about it. This is the way we’re gonna do it.’ I’m like, ‘Fine. It’s gonna suck. When it sucks, it’s gonna be on you,’ which he didn’t appreciate that either,” Taker said.

When the match took place, Taker said the gate escape spot didn’t get the reaction McMahon expected. It fell flat with the crowd.

After the match, The Undertaker didn’t even have to bring it up. He said he simply looked at McMahon backstage, and the former WWE Chairman already knew what had happened.

“We did it the way he wanted it and it was flat. I mean, it was like womp, womp, womp, womp. And so I go back and I just looked at him. I didn’t have to say a word. He knew. And he goes, almost under his breath, he goes, ‘Uh, yeah, I think you were right on that cage spot.’ And I was like, ‘Really?’ He just turned around and walked off. But that was such a victory for me, to actually have him admit that he was wrong on something,” Taker said.
