Squad Players
Even a team like Chelsea are going to provide players to national sides that will probably not see much game time. At the age of 20, and included as a third-choice keeper, it was not expected that Mike Penders would get on the pitch for Belgium. But his inclusion will do wonders for his development, as he looks to establish himself as a professional.
Senegal’s Mamadou Sarr was also an unused substitute throughout the tournament, but he is also 20 and has time on his side to become a more established figure for his national team. Knockout Rounds
It shows the quality of players at Chelsea that the vast majority of Blues who went to the World Cup played more than three games and progressed to the knockout rounds of the competition. As well as some of the other players already mentioned, two made it to the round of 32, having featured heavily for their teams in the previous games.
Moises Caicedo was perhaps the most influential, taking Ecuador all the way to a tough tie against Mexico at the Azteca. His leadership qualities were also on show, as he captained his country twice at the tournament. Nicolas Jackson, who spent the end of last season on loan at Bayern, also made it that far, invariably coming on as a substitute when Senegal needed some extra firepower.
Pedro Neto joined his Portugal team in making it a round further, to the last 16, but was unable to help it get past the immovable object that was the Spain defense. Malo Gusto had the same problem as a regular sub for France, as his team bowed out in the semifinals after looking like its name was already on the cup at one point.
England Heroes
For most Chelsea fans, having Blues in the England squad at a World Cup finals is probably what they are most proud of. Both Reece James and Trevor Chalobah were included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad and added their own effort to a valiant campaign that ended in heartbreak against Argentina.
Chalobah will have wanted more game time, after only coming on right at the end of the third-place playoff against France. But Reece James was more regularly used throughout the tournament, providing expert blocking when needed and adding an extra attacking dimension down the right side of the field.
World Cup Winner and Finalist
There is one Chelsea player who will probably always have very mixed feelings about the 2026 World Cup. Enzo Fernandez played almost every minute of every game in the run-up to the final, only missing out on the final group game against Jordan on the way. He scored against Egypt in the round of 32 game before breaking English hearts by scoring the equalizer against the Three Lions with seconds to go in the semi.
But it is his performance in the final itself that he will have to deal with now. Fernandez threw himself wholeheartedly into the Argentina cause, trying to stifle Spain, but his rash challenge on Pau Cubarsi near the end of normal time tipped the balance in his opponent’s favor. A red card saw Argentina attempt to keep going with just ten men, and that was ultimately not enough.
Although he will now be resting before preseason training in Madrid, we can still claim Marc Cucurella as a Chelsea World Cup winner, as that is what he was registered as before the tournament. Some of the skills he learned at the Bridge and has developed as a Chelsea player came to the fore during the competition, as he was on the pitch for every single second that Spain played.
His defensive and attacking capabilities were essential for La Roja as it strode to another World Cup triumph, while Cucurella reminded all Chelsea fans what they will be missing when the new season kicks off in August.

Chelsea has already spent big on providing Xabi Alonso with a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title, and more, this season. As ever, there are lots of international players that have been keen to sign for the club and keep the Blues as a global club.
