The July 21 episode of WWE NXT was a big show, and fans were treated to a first-time ever match to close out the broadcast. The NXT Title had never been defended in a street fight before tonight, but there is a first for everything. You also never know who you will see on NXT, because the brand is due for some new faces to fill up top roster spots.
Tony D’Angelo and Naraku put their bodies on the line as they battled in the NXT Arena for the brand’s biggest prize. The former Evil from NJPW targeted Tony D since his debut, and they left it all in the ring tonight.
This match started off with Naraku blinding Tony D’Angelo from the opening bell with poison mist. Then he spent some time taking the NXT Champion to the woodshed, bringing plenty of chairs and the steel ring steps into the ring to punish Tony.
D’Angelo finally mounted a comeback, rinsed his eyes out, and started his offense against Naraku as the program cut to its first commercial break.
The fight broke through the curtain, and they moved their way through the backstage area. Then the two top NXT Superstars made their way back to the ring, where Tony D’Angelo put Naraku down with a brutal suplex on the entrance. Finally, they got back into the ring, where Naraku grabbed a kendo stick, but Tony picked up a crowbar, old faithful, from under the ring to split the stick in two.
Tony D’Angelo brought out a ladder and a table, but Naraku almost put Tony through the table. Then Naraku took a ride into a trash can that was wedged in the turnbuckle for a near fall.
The match kept going with brutal back-and-forth action until the closing moments. In the end, Tony D’Angelo blinded Naraku and took him to the woodshed with a kendo stick. He got Naraku up on the ring steps that were brought into the ring eariler in the match and sent the newcomer through a table for the win.
This was a big victory for Tony D’Angelo as he has cemented himself as the face of NXT for now. Only time will tell how much longer this reign lasts, but Tony survived tonight.
As Tony D’Angelo celebrated his big win, Santana’s music hit, and he came out through the NXT Universe. It appears that Santana is a part of NXT, and he is gunning for Tony D’Angelo’s NXT Title.
