Nelson came in as the WBC’s #10-ranked featherweight contender after accepting the fight as a late replacement. Largely unknown to American fans, the 24-year-old Ghanaian had never faced anyone close to Sanchez’s level, and most observers expected another successful title defense for the champion.
The unfamiliar challenger hurt attendance. Only 5,575 fans paid to attend the event, producing a modest gate of $129,244 despite Don King serving as promoter. Sanchez, as the champion and established attraction, earned the larger purse. Nelson also received the biggest payday of his young career, although the official purse figures were never publicly disclosed. Veteran referee Tony Perez worked the bout.
What unfolded surprised nearly everyone. Instead of being overwhelmed, Nelson attacked Sanchez from the opening bell with relentless pressure. He fired hooks, overhand rights and body punches, forcing the champion into one of the toughest fights of his title reign. Nelson captured several early rounds with his aggression and briefly had Sanchez backing toward the ropes, something rarely seen during the champion’s prime.
Sanchez began making the necessary adjustments. Beginning in the middle rounds, his timing became sharper. He started landing crisp counter left hooks, straight rights and punishing body shots that slowed Nelson’s relentless attack.
In the seventh round, Sanchez scored the fight’s lone knockdown with a sharp left hook, but Nelson beat the count and survived the remainder of the round.
Sanchez closed the fight by landing the sharper combinations and investing to the body, gradually breaking down Nelson’s offense before the 15th-round stoppage.
The conclusion arrived in the 15th and final round. Sanchez trapped Nelson along the ropes and unloaded a sustained barrage of hooks and body shots. Nelson remained upright but was no longer defending himself effectively. At 1:49 of Round 15, Perez stepped in and stopped the contest, awarding Sanchez a technical knockout after one of the finest performances of both men’s careers.
Following the fight, Sanchez praised Nelson’s toughness, later describing him as one of the strongest and most durable opponents he had faced. The fight proved career-defining for both men.
It became the final chapter of an extraordinary career for Salvador after his death on August 12, 1982, in a Porsche crash that deprived boxing of one of its brightest young champions. Many historians still rank him among the greatest featherweights in history despite his short career.
The defeat for Nelson became a launching point rather than a setback. The defeat raised Nelson’s profile, and he went on to win world titles in three weight classes before being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Over four decades later, Sanchez-Nelson has grown in stature. What appeared to be a routine title defense during the summer of 1982 is now remembered as one of the finest featherweight championship fights ever contested and the unforgettable final masterpiece of Salvador Sanchez’s career.
