The goal for Glasgow Rangers in the upcoming 2026/27 campaign is clear: End the five-year wait to win the Scottish Premiership title under Derek McInnes.
To achieve that objective, the Light Blues will need to add more genuine, proven, quality to bolster the squad and ensure that the manager has what he needs to mount a serious title challenge.
You could argue that the last transformational signing made by the Light Blue was Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane, because of the quality that he provided on the pitch and what he achieved after leaving the club.
Whilst the Gers were unable to win the Premiership title in the 2024/25 campaign, under Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson, the talented youngster showed his class at Ibrox.
Why Rangers need more players like Hamza Igamane
Rangers only paid £1.7m to sign the centre-forward from FAR Rabat, yet he hit the ground running in Glasgow with impressive cameos against Celtic and Dundee United in his first two outings.
The 23-year-old attacker went on to produce 12 goals and ten ‘big chances’ created in 23 starts in the Scottish Premiership, and four goals and six ‘big chances’ created in four starts in the Europa League.
His performances on the European stage, in particular, make him stand out in comparison to the 2025/26 crop of players, as no Gers player scored more than two goals in the Europa League last season.
Igamane’s return of nine goals and two assists for Lille after a £10.4m move to France in the summer of 2025 is further proof of his genuine quality at the top level, as he hit the ground running as a star in one of Europe’s major leagues.
The Gers, therefore, should be looking for players who are similar in quality to the Morocco international, who was playing in Scotland with the ability to also deliver on the European stage and in a top five league.
How Rangers could sign their biggest talent since Igamane
Now, the Scottish Premiership giants are said to be eyeing a star who could arrive at Ibrox this summer as their biggest talent since Igamane, fitting the bill for what they should be looking for ahead of next season.
The Daily Record reports that Glasgow Rangers want to add another central midfielder to their squad in the summer transfer window, despite the signings of Dan Neil and Cammy Devlin on free transfers.
It claims that McInnes has Jens Hjerto-Dahl, Vanja Dragojevic, and Lewis Ferguson high up on his shortlist of targets to bolster his options in the middle of the park.
However, the Daily Record adds that any move for Ferguson, or the other two, may depend on what happens with Nicolas Raskin, who has previously been linked to Real Betis.
Ferguson, who has previously been touted at a fee of £17m, would be the club’s biggest talent since Igamane and a transformational signing for the Gers, as it would be a rare move that would see a proven major leagues star in his prime sign for the club.
The Light Blues typically pursue unproven young talents with potential, players in their prime outside of the major leagues, or veterans looking to revive their careers, rather than major league stars in their prime.
2026 World Cup | Lewis Ferguson |
|---|---|
Appearances | 3 |
Pass accuracy | 93% |
Tackles per game | 4.0 |
Interceptions per game | 1.3 |
Duels won per game | 8.7 |
Ground duel success rate | 67% |
Aerial duel success rate | 50% |
Ferguson is fresh off the back of catching the eye at the World Cup with Scotland, despite their round of 32 exit, as he averaged a staggering 4.3 tackles and interceptions per match, more than any Gers player averaged in the Premiership last term.
The right-footed midfielder showcased his physicality on the world stage by winning 67% of his ground duels, winning 8.7 duels per match in total, which suggests that he would be able to dominate midfields in the Premiership.
He was able to shine at the World Cup because he is a player with genuine quality who has already proven that he can play in Europe’s major leagues, with 106 appearances in the Serie A to date.
Ferguson has scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 135 appearances for Bologna in all competitions, after he scored 37 goals and racked up 23 assists in 169 matches for Aberdeen during his time in Scotland.
The 26-year-old star, who completed 88% of his passes and won 53% of his duels in the Serie A last season, would arrive at Ibrox as a player who can hit the ground running as an instant star, raising the ceiling of the team with his proven quality.
Igamane, given what he has achieved since leaving for Lille, was a player who had similar quality and make a big impact on the pitch during his time at Rangers, and Ferguson could be the most transformational addition to the squad since the Moroccan.
